Anywhere I have lived, junior high has been billed as 7th-9th, while middle school is 6th-8th.

Middle school is 7-8 here. The charter school my dd went to called 5-8 the "Middle Grades." About half the school districts around here have K-8 elementary school with no middle school or Jr. High.

6-8, maybe to 9

Growing up middle school was 6-8 but youth group was 7th and up. 6th grade was an awkward year, felt too old for the kid group! They should specify grades on the advertising!!

7-9

In Idaho our school was elementary up to 6th, middle school 7-9, high school 10-12

Here it's 7-8 for middle school but without knowing where the program was I would figure 7-9 was the range

I've always thought of middle school as 6th-8th, possibly 5th-8th. 7th-9th is junior high.
6-8 middle school

7-9 junior high

I would have thought what you thought. Middle school here is 6-8. I know some places it starts at 5th.

When it's starts at 7th grade its called junior high where I have lived.

I would say 7-8, but I grew up where you are so maybe it is related to where you are/what you are used to.

Oh, that is interesting. I would think 6th grade is "middle school". I bet that made your daughter feel awkward.

Where I grew up, we didn't have middle school. Jr High was 7-9. A few years ago they built new schools and revamped things so that they now have K-2 Primary, 3-5 Elementary, 6-8 Middle School, and 9-12 High School.

It wasn't until I moved to the East Coast in college that I heard of Middle School and in every district I'm aware of, it's 6-8. I thought my little hometown was just following a trend. It sounds like there's some variation, but not a whole lot. I would have assumed my 6th grader was the right age for a youth group activity.

Soliloquy - was your daughter upset?

I was wondering that, too. What sort of activity was it? Was the one year age difference really an issue (in content or maturity level)?

And yes, here (Ontario, Canada), our breakdown, with the exception of the odd grade 6 - 8 school that includes the 6's as Intermediate, is:

Junior kindergarten - grade 3: Primary
Grade 4 - 6: Junior
Grade 7 & 8: Intermediate
Grade 9 - 12: High school

She wasn't upset at all but I think it was awkward for her. She's 5'7", does 7th-10th grade level academic work, and fits in well with kids of all ages. So I'm kind of surprised the question was even asked. The leader said she could keep coming but we're going to try another church that has a group for 5th-6th graders.
