There isn't a standard definition, which can be confusing. Our district has 7-8 as middle school, but it varies a lot in surrounding districts.

Activities outside of school should be labeled by age/grade IMO.

7 and 8 comes to my mind too because that's what I grew up with.

Growing up, middle school/junior high were interchangeable as well and only included 7th and 8th graders.

However, the trends have changed for our children's generation and middle school is now generally understood to be 6th through 8th. I agree with your thoughts that 6th-8th is middle school vs junior high being 7th-9th.

Curious....what grades make up the middle school in your local district?

The last church we went to did stuff like that specifically to exclude homeschoolers . Hoping that's not.what's happening here.

I can see that if your local school district divides it that way. 6th grade is considered transitional/later elementary in some districts, and middle school/junior high (same meaning) is only 7th-8th.

I haven't heard of anywhere considering 9th grade junior high anymore though I know it was in prior generations. It's always considered high school nationwide AFAIK.

Yea I would think it would mostly be dictated by what your local school system calls "middle school." Because that would shape most of the locals opinion.

What are the grades in the local middle schools there?

Middle school is 6-8 where I come from.

That is a really narrow program if it is only for 7-8 graders and the leader had to point that out to your daughter. Are you going to ask the leader why she questioned your daughter? And maybe point out that she is working on 7th and 8th grade material in homeschooling, for example? And tell her that if she intends only 7-8th grade, would she kindly make it a point to be clear about it?

Where I went to school, jr. High/middle school was 7/8. Where we live now, 6-8 is considered jr high/m.s.

I went to a middle school growing up. It was 6-8.
My kids go to an intermediate school which is 5th & 6th. The. To a junior high which is 7th & 8th.
9th thru 12th is considered senior high in our district.

Our district has middle school as 6-8, but our church and all the surrounding churches are 7 & 8 only, I think because many of the districts in the area are only 7 & 8 for middle school.

6-8 is middle school. When I was in school 7-9 was Jr High. Now elementary ends with 5th grade and 9th and up is just High School.

6-8 I daresay most all of the middle schools in our county are 6-8.

When I was in 6th though, we had an "intermediate" school that was 5-6 and junior high was 7-8 Because of that brief time in history, 6th grade still stands alone in a lot of area churches. I.e. too old for children's too young for youth. The church I grew up in made 6th grade the place to be though, with very dedicated Sunday School teachers who did lots of outside trips, 6th grade only camps, etc... So, I would say if your church considers 6th youth, it's really weird to say 6th graders aren't included in middle school stuff.

6th-8th

I always thought of "Jr. High" as 7th-8th

At my church growing up, we had a Jr High & High School youth group, 7th-12th. We actually usually specified the grades so people would know it didn't include 6th.

In our schools it is grades 6-8. In other schools in our area, middle school is just grades 7-8. I think if it is grades 7-9 it is called Jr. High. In our church, middle school referred only to grades 7-8.
