It makes an amazing marinade. Happy Herbalist has a list of uses. You can also cut it with fruit juice and then let it ferment another day, tightly capped. Lure a wine cooler, then. Quote:

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
ok. I'm far too lazy right this minute to read this whole thread.
I bought a bottle of plain kombucha today. I can start my own from that right? I have no clue where I'd look for a scoby |

Yes you can. I'll bbl with directions if you can't find them. Search for "growing a kombucha scoby"

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
Argh.
DH drank 12 oz kombucha when I've been giving him 4-6. Now he has a headache. Let's bet he says he'll never touch the stuff again. There goes my family diet plan. He did this with flax oil. He refused flax in anything for almost 8 years. Now as long as I don't give him the oil he can deal. |

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
just use the bottle for the starter.... follow the rest of the directions for regular KT. It will grow a scoby. It will take a little bit longer.

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
Here's my SCOBY story, tell me what you think:
Previous SCOBY died a moldy death-at least I think it was mold, it had black specks all in it so I decided to give up on that one and start again. I cleaned the crock out well, made up the sweet tea, and poured in a whole bottle of the same brand of Kombucha I used to make the last scoby. After a few days I peek in and see a big blob of the same black specky stuff I think it's a lost cause, which is when I came in and asked my last few questions. BUT a few days later I peeked again because I was going to toss the whole thing and try again, but a perfectly healthy-looking SCOBY had formed separately from the black bit! I performed surgery and cut out the black specky stuff. It's doing well, growing a baby, and no more signs of the black specks of death. So I'm wondering if somehow the kombucha knew there was a pathogen in the crock and decontaminated it before it tried to grow a SCOBY? What do you guys think?

You are only supposed to brew kt in glass, not a crock.
If you get black specks again, post a picture. Were they dark brown or truly black? Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2 |

It's a glass crock. They definitely looked black to me.

Weird ... Hope all goes well this time!
Were the spots fuzzy or dusty looking? Could they have been tea leaves? Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2 |

IIRC, in this video Dr Cassar talks about how to brew it from storebought kombucha tea.

Re: kombucha 101 thread! *another new question #63 and 64*
I do. I got mine off amazon, it was a pkg of 2 rolls of tape (2 different ranges). I looked at local stores (nutrition, aquariums, pools), but they all were the wrong range. You need to be able to test acidic, like 2-4 at least.

They weren't tea leaves; uniform in size, not fuzzy. It is weird...
