Ever made bagels?

I miss them. Here in the south they like biscuits, they don't really do bagels, only fake bagels like the Lender's kind you buy in the grocery store. The closest thing I can find is Costco bakery, they are still not right though, they are not like a bagel that comes from a bagel shop. Wondering if I have any chance of making them, this is the recipe I was looking at:

Those look good, no bread machine here though.

You don't really need a bread machine. I make them by hand or in my kitchen aid too. There's nothing special about the bread machine. You just use it to knead.

I made some ironically from a Southern Living recipe several years ago, and they tasted just like bagels from H&H on the Upper West Side. IOW, delicious! Go for it! The boiling action is really fun.

Not sure where you are in VA, but if you get up to the Harrisonburg area check out Mr. J's bagel shop. I SO miss it, there is nothing to compare out here in the midwest. Supposedly they are authentic NYC style bagels. Having never been to NYC I can't judge, but they sure are good. (And the Roman Chicken bagel sandwich...mmmmmm. And the Orange Juice muffins....sigh.)

As for making bagels...I got nothing. I tried it once and ended up with soggy doughy messes that were pretty much inedible. I'll have to try with some of these recipes.

Harrisonburg is pretty far but it sounds really yummy. I haven't tried the bagels yet, kids are being a handful.
