146 reasons why sugar is bad for you

Wish I could take them seriously
I am totally addicted

And yeah, unless the whole family change and the shopping changes it is REALLY extra hard to go low-sugar

Tuesdays Child, totally OT, but both me and my DH are a Tuesday's Child.

So if we compiled a good sweetner/bad sweetner list based on which ones are refined and which are more complex, what would it look like?

I have so many questions and confusions about sweeteners...

We buy local unrefined non-pastuerized honey...

We buy organic local maple syrup (pure maple syrup is NOT the same as organic maple syrup... I can't remember what the difference is now, but my stepmom was telling me that "pure" maple syrup is deceptive because of some processing it receives, I believe... )

When we buy juice or soda we try to buy 100% organic fruit sweetened with no added sugars...

We buy organic raw sugar. I thought that was better than buying refined highly processed sugar... now I'm not so sure.

We buy xylitol but I don't like it much cause it has an artificial sweetener type after taste to me...

ETA: The above are our "usuals", but we do splurge on candy, chocolate and regular soda (no artificial sweeteners EVER) on occasion...

Sugar is a drug. It has addictive properties.

Sugar taxes your endocrine system to the max. You end up with problems with your pancreas and your adrenals which ends up causing insulin problems and adrenal fatigue.

Sugar and other refined products cause your liver to be overworked and send out fat and cholesterol which gets stored in the body causing weight problems and clogged arteries.

Eating refined products weakens your immune system. Sugar cane has vitamins and minerals in it. When it is refined and turned into table sugar it is close to 100% pure carbohydrate. All the vitamins and minerals have been removed so that when you consume it your body actually leeches the vitamins and minerals from itself to process the sugar. Over consumption of refined sugar (which I believe includes products like raw sugar and turbinado) leads to a nutrient deficiency which compromises the immune system.

Agave nectar and fruit juice concentrates are primarily fructose, which, consumed in large quantities, can also be damaging to your body. Fructose is actually very hard for the liver to process. When we consume it in naturally occuring quantities in fruits the amount of fructose is fairly self-limiting...one can only eat so much fruit at a time. However, when we consume straight or concentrated fructose like we would refined sugar, it can lead to problems as well.

When we need a sweetner for our foods we like to use rapadura, organic maple syrup, dates, or raw honey...all as unrefined as possible, all products that still contain the nutrients they were designed to have, and we use as little as possible.

The things that I have had improve since cutting out refined sugars:

My complexion
My ability to be patient
My moods are stable and my emotional responses are in line with the events that cause them
Less PMS symptoms
My energy level is stable

And we haven't even mentioned teeth... *shudder*

Organiquegal - Cool! I have no idea when I was born (day-wise I mean - I know my b-day ) I picked it for the poem: Tuesday's Child is full of Grace. Because that's what I'd like to be. It is a name of hope, not a statement of fact (yet!)

Now I have a question.
Isn't Rapadura the brand name for a minimally processed cane sugar?
I don't have any in the cupboard right now or I would go look. I would include it with SUGAR and say I think it is one of the only ways it should be processed, except all the sudden I wonder if I have confused it with something else.

The only rapadura I have seen in the stores is the Rapunzel brand. It is whole sugar cane that is ground. I don't actually think that it tastes very sweet....I think because it still has all the molasses and everything in it.

Jenn, do you have any research material to support these statements, or is this something you have found based on personal experience? I have PCOS, and they have found a connection to insulin regulation that helps the symptoms. These points you make are really fascinating! My fertility specialist recommended the south beach diet, but can't really provide any supporting information other than "it seems to work the best for people with PCOS". Interesting that the #1 thing they are cutting out is simple carbs, sugars, white flour, white rice, etc...

In addition, my stepmother is studying to become an herbalist, and they recommend a liver cleanse to improve fertility.

You have GOT to set aside 45 minutes to watch the video clip on this link. VERY interesting! http://macrobiotics.co.uk/sugar.htm

I'm also compiling a bunch of info about sugar on my PCOS blog. It's a work in progress and I will keep adding to it as I find more info.... If you want to leave a comment with your thoughts, please do! (the link is in my siggie).

That's interesting since I eat a good amount of sugar & I haven't been sick for 16 months+ since I had to give up dairy, wheat, soy & corn. There must be other factors at play

I just watched the video, and oh my, just the ethical implications around eating sugar should be enough to have me stop - the non-fairtrade kind that is. And suddenly honey and maple syrup seem all that much more appealing!!

I thought the priest's work was awesome though, what a life of devotion!

I'd love to do a challenge and/or have an accountability partner about being sugar free....but I need to wait until the day after Valentines Day because I know I won't be able to say no to the desserts then. But after that I'll be ready.
