Freezing Greens for smoothies
How do you do it?
I have come up with a few options but not sure which would be best: A) blend them & label how much greens are in the container B) Freeze them whole in water C) Freeze them whole in the juice I don't want to make the smoothie & then freeze that. We don't eat a lot of cooked greens & this is the only way we use them in our diet but I buy a huge bag of organic greens from Costco & the last batch went bad before we used it all. We don't make smoothies every day. Any other suggestions? What have you done & what seemed to work best for you. |

Freeze them in the bag.

Re: Freezing Greens for smoothies
Once I blended some in diluted green tea & froze in cubes....other than that, rinsed, pat dry with paper towels & frozen flat in a gallon ziploc bag.

Yes! If it's a huge bag, then you may want to split it up. Or put some in a container to use fresh, and freeze the other 1/2. I've frozen the Org. kale blend and those mega spinach bags from Costco after I've taken some out.

Re: Freezing Greens for smoothies
Yeah, I just buy a huge plastic box and transfer them in freezer bags. Then just grab out handfuls for the smoothie.

Re: Freezing Greens for smoothies
Thanks. I guess I was over thinking it.
I'll split it out into the cups I need for the recipe we use the most (on the back of the bag) & just freeze. Then if I do feel like cooking them I can grab one or two bags out. |

Re: Freezing Greens for smoothies
They become very brittle in the freezer. If I tried to blend in water then freeze, I'd never remember to defrost them in time!

Re: Freezing Greens for smoothies
I have done this with leftover spinach, just throwing it in a bag, but the other texture is always funky compared to fresh spinach. Like it doesn't blend as well. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Freezing Greens for smoothies
I threw kale and spinach into the blender and added water. Then poured the green into muffin tins and froze. Once frozen I popped them out into a zipper freezer bag and pull one out at a time to toss into our smoothies. My blender can handle the "hockey puck" but it wouldn't take long to thaw one in a zipper baggie in a glass of hot water
