Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
We got a new neighbor last year and she smokes like a chimney. Now the smell is some how coming in to our house!!!! Which I assume means our air quality is compromised and we're dealing with a second hand smoke situation. This is *not* okay, we have small children.
What are my options here? 1) it concerns me that the smell is coming through, but our home is just about 100 years old so I guess fire walls were different? 2) is there some thing I can say to her about it? What? She's very nice, albeit probably a little unstable (she's thrown some wild parties) we're on good terms and I don't want to have an issue but the smell gets really strong into the night (when she has friends over and they all seem to just...I can't imagine what it's like over there, and her poor puppy breathing that in ) Also, who might we contact to help us address and assess the shared ventilation/gaps in the wall that are allowing this to come through? I'm sitting here smelling it SO strongly right now and it's making me and that my baby is breathing this in too. Help?

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
Do you own or rent? If you rent, I suggest discussing this with the landlord.

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
I have no idea, praying for your situation. In he previous rental we had I had that issue with smoke coming down a chimney from the place above. I ended up blocking it with styrofoam.

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
Aw man, that's SO frustrating! When we lived in the city, the neighbour behind us was a smoker and it drove me MAD because in the spring and summer I would be in my house with the windows open and suddenly get a whiff of cigarette smoke. At least in my case I could close my windows (which still bothered me because I LOVE opening my windows on the few Michigan days that weather allows ). I can't imagine having it come through the ventilation system.
I agree that if you rent, talking to your landlord is the best first course of action. Praying that you are able to find a resolution. This is not something that I could live with either.

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
No suggestions but validating that it would drive me crazy. A few years back I had some threads about DH's niece smoking in the house when she lived with us. It caused me major anxiety

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
I have dealt with this before too.So it happens when windows closed? maybe you could install an attic fan of some kind to ventilate indoor air out of house?

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
We own so no land Lord. It is coming I some where in the dining room and upstairs ball way, some where in that wall.
I'm wondering if there are air quality specialists or some thing that help with this sort of thing.? Does that exist? Who should I search for? I want this fixed in as much as we can. Would a HEPA filter help? We have 2/Windows we can hope where we don't get smoke smell, we have to be on alert because some times her guests will smoke on her front porch and it will come in if the front window is open. ---------- Post added at 10:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:02 AM ---------- Our attic is finished and the kids bedroom so I'm not sure having anything vent through there . above the bathroom is flat roof so we could potentially put some sort of better vent out through there and it is in the center of the upstairs... I don't know who to call or what to search for. I searched "air quality home specialist" last night but that wasn't helpful. Thankfully she is only really home in the middle of the night and on occasion during the weekend days. And the smoke smell only seems to come through when she has friends over (I guess if you get 4+ people smoking in a room it makes enough smoke to be an issue. I just can't imagine what they are doing to their and her pets bodies.

Oh no, that would make me furious. I see red when cigarette smoke invades my space. I can ask my Dh if he has any ideas.

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
I would ring a roof plumber or dry wall specialist and see if they can point you to the right kind of trade who deals with this. I've done that sort of thing before.

---------- Post added at 12:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:30 PM ---------- Some one PM'd me and mentioned an insulation company! It's a masonry wall between us (with plaster and that iron stake stuff, names escaping me ), but I wonder if the spray foam stuff would work inside? Or if we chipped down to the brick if we could do some thing to seal it better and then add dry wall? I'm going to talk to dh. We were trouble shooting and the most affordable option at this point is one of those box fan hepa filter attachments we can run when we start to smell it (it will also drown out her noise). It can't hurt to get an estimate and figure some thing out.

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
Oh I see, so you share a common wall. And masonry walls dont usually have much insulaton inside. There is also a kind of paint that better seals masonry walls like in basements so damp doesnt seep in.That might be another option to explore

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
Are there companies that do energy audits there? Some place like that where they are set up to completely seal up a house and then put in venting should be able to help.

Re: Twin Home Second Hand Smoke
I wanted to give a little update. I have contacted an insulation company for a quote. In the mean time... Well I was up at 4a.m. yesterday morning and our living room absolutely wreaked of cigarette smoke. We have an Air Free ionizer thing that we keep in the basement family room to keep damp/basement smell at bay. Honestly I had my doubts the thing even worked. But I brought it upstairs and got it going in the living room. We haven't smelled any smoke since! We've had the doors open and closed and she had people over yesterday (that's usually when it's the worst!)
The basement family room however smells super basementy again all of a sudden.
