Unprepared for Parenting (Ezzos, Pearls, Etc.) *Public* Support and information for those affected by the Ezzos, the Pearls, and other punitive and adversarial methods of child-rearing.
A public forum.
Before posting here, please read this sticky and keep guideline 23 in mind:

23. No posts harshly dissecting parenting moments of others since we desire to humbly cultivate a heart attitude of grace and not judgment towards other mamas. We all struggle at times as parents and have much to learn, and GCM's focus is to provide tools and information for each of us to parent more effectively. Posts voicing some frustration regarding choices made by others can be okay, but it needs to be within the overall context of seeking understanding or ideas for better responses in the future.

Yes. The attempts at defense--"context", etc., are just so wildly inadequate.

The replies made me angry. How dare someone say that they hope their right to parent isn't taken away. What about the right of a child to feel safe? I never felt safe as a child when I was spanked, even if it was done in a calm manner. Never, ever. I felt small, and insignificant and hurt.

Nobody can hit me. My boss at work who would be in authority can't slap my hands for handing in a sloppy report. That's called assault. There are even laws to protect my employment. Yet it's fully within parental right to correct behaviour with our hands? It makes me burn with rage!

Thanks for posting, relizabeth. I meant to last night when I first read it, but ran out of time. The comments were getting me pretty riled up.

I hate the illogical defenses. And they keep saying "oh well plumbing supply line can't cause pain or damage"... it DID! It KILLED A CHILD!

I agreed with the person that said to add GKGW to the list. The Ezzo materials are ripe for brainwashing.

This is what is *really* a horror -- this was a *7* year old child! I don't know about anyone else, but my 7 yo's have all been rather sturdy. The other one was *11* years old! The sheer amount of force and strength it would take to hurt bodies that age! It is mind boggling!!!! AND PLUMBING SUPPLY LINE DON'T HURT?!?!?!???!?!?!?! Oh, there is *not* an emoticon that can display the amount of outrage I feel. . . . .

Over the years as my parents heard spanking preached from the pulpit different things were used for spanking - their hands, wooden spoons, spatulas, and "the switch". I was about 10 when they brought in the switch. It was long and thin, they bought it at a hardware store. It stung and hurt more than hands, more than the spoon or anything else. You wouldn't think it to look at it. Same with the plumbing line I'm sure.

Ugh, the replies just make me wonko. I don't understand how people can view children that way - objects to be dominated and controlled. I cannot imagine hurting the most precious thing to me. I feel like while teaching her and keeping her safe it's my job to make childhood the most wonderful and magical time, not make her a mini-adult and beat her when she can't.

It sickens me to read that one poster prays with his child before and after a spanking. Great way to create an atheist.

You know what? I think people who see their children this way necessarily see themselves that way too, and worse, think that's how God sees them.
