Ugh...yet another thing
I just had to buy a new vacuum. Now I think I need a new washing machine. Our washer doesn't get my clothes clean anymore. It smells. I can't get it clean. DH took it apart and cleaned it out and we've done a few cleaning cycles including a stripping cycle. It still stinks and now all our clothes stink.
All I know is I do *not* want another front loader. But are washing machines *really* $1000! We don't have that kind of money right now. |

Not if you get a cheap toploader. I want to say we paid $400 for ours and it gets things cleaner than my MIL's fancy front loader.

Does Energy Star really make a difference?
The new house has a 12 year old top loader that is coming with the house, and I'm toying with just keeping it in there rather than moving it to the rent house. |

We got a commercial Maytag HE top loader at Lowe's for less than $500.
Honestly, if I had to do it over again, I would get a regular (non-HE) top loader. Those were $300-$400.

AFA Energy Start . . . I dunno, but it takes a lot of saved energy to cancel out a $1000 (or even $500) new machine.

If you have a Sears Outlet/Refurbishment store near you, you can find some great deals on washer/dryers there. The staff should be able to tell you why it was rejected--anything from a bad motor () to a cosmetic ding on the side.

Call your local Sears and they should be able to tell you if they have a scratch and dent near you You might even luck out at some place like Home Depot or Lowes with scratch and dent. In that same regard, I know HD/Lowes often run specials where you can get a gift card with a purchase of a certain amount. Check to see what kind of sales they have running.

Re: Ugh...yet another thing
I'd see how the 12yo top loader worked out, before buying another washing machine.
