Default How to cosleep with breastfed twins

Posting for a friend:

How do I get some sleep while cosleeping with breastfed twins? They have a 2 lb difference so they don't eat the same amount, the smaller twin eats less but needs to more often. The bigger twin sleeps harder and longer too.

I haven't had twins, so take this with whatever grains of salt are necessary.

I'd probably get a co-sleeper and put one of them in there. I think I would also wake the smaller twin up every time the bigger one needed to eat and feed them both at the same time (if she can bf both at once). I also hope dh is on night time diaper changes (even if he has to work in the morning- so does she!)

Also she might try and see if one or both of them would sleep longer in a baby swing and swaddled. I swaddled my babies until over a year old and it worked wonders and they always napped in the swing and would sleep longer there. It was well worth the price of batteries!

The family I nannied for during college but a king size mattress on the floor next to the big bed. Mom and babies nested there with dad close by.

Different things worked at different ages . . . there's definitely "trial and error". We had a twin mattress side-car'd next to our queen mattress (my dad built a platform for it with walls around 3 sides that we padded and covered with fabric). I slept on the side of the queen bed that had the side car, with one baby in the side car and the other one between dh & me in bed (that's contrary to safety recommendations. We felt it was safe in our situation, use good judgement for your situation). I rolled back and forth into the co-sleeper to nurse that baby, back into the bed to nurse the other baby. They both nursed to sleep and then their mouths fell open, releasing the nipple. I could sleep while they nursed so only had to be awake to roll over and latch on whichever baby fussed. That's not true of all babies, Lina wiggled more when she nursed and needed me to unlatch her so she could roll away from me in order for her to go back to sleep, which meant I had to stay awake while she nursed during the night.

Sometimes they thrive and do well if placed in cosleeper snuggled together too.It does seem to be a trial and error thing

For us, we had the bigger twin in the cosleeper and the smaller one in bed. I never woke anyone to feed (outside the first few weeks when it was necessary for weight) like most will recommend with twins. I let them both set their schedules and it really wasn't bad at all. Honestly I did it that way because waking one when another wakes meant I had to sit up to nurse and I became more alert where if I just rolled over as each one needed I could still semi sleep during sessions and I felt more rested in the morning.
