Unprepared for Parenting (Ezzos, Pearls, Etc.) *Public* Support and information for those affected by the Ezzos, the Pearls, and other punitive and adversarial methods of child-rearing.
A public forum.
Before posting here, please read this sticky and keep guideline 23 in mind:

23. No posts harshly dissecting parenting moments of others since we desire to humbly cultivate a heart attitude of grace and not judgment towards other mamas. We all struggle at times as parents and have much to learn, and GCM's focus is to provide tools and information for each of us to parent more effectively. Posts voicing some frustration regarding choices made by others can be okay, but it needs to be within the overall context of seeking understanding or ideas for better responses in the future.

Default Another reason not to cio

It doesn't "work"! My friend is doing this with her 9 month old. Yesterday was the fourth night and he cried till 2am! The night before he fell asleep after *only* an hour of crying, but then woke up every hour or so whimpering....

*sigh*

And even when parents think it is "working"--very often it isn't.

I only found out later when I thought one of my boys was "sleeping through the night" that he was really waking and crying--and I didn't hear him. I think I had trained myself to not "hear" it anymore. (I found out from my sister who did hear. . .)

That's really sad.

Another thing is, people will tell you it's a one time shot, that within 3 days it'll be over with and they'll be sleeping through the night forever, but thats simply not true. You'll have to do it again after a holiday where their routine has been disrupted, after an illness, a bad bout of teething, etc, etc.

This is so true. In BW support groups, there are constant questions about "getting back on schedule" and such. Mothers who like CIO may only remember an intial "training" period with minimal crying, but in the aggregate there is a LOT of crying at naps, disrupted schedules, etc.

It doesn't work. Doug cried for every nap and bedtime (usually less than 2-3 minutes) until he was 14 months old.

I've read that most parents who do CIO find out that there kids are still waking and crying whenever they have house guests or are visiting relatives. They'll wake up the next morning and someone will say, "Sally sure cried a lot last night. What was wrong?" and the parents will realize that they've been the ones who've been trained--not to hear their child's cries.

I was reading on another board yesterday and a Mom said she let her child CIO for SIX HOURS!! How could you as a person with EARS tolorate that for hours on end and not want to put a stop to it?? Not the fact that it's your child crying - but that NOISE alone would make me want to stop it...

When Jack gets upset while eating/diapering/etc... I want to pull my hair out when he cries hard for 20 seconds.

Breaks my heart - the 'advice' on that other site was... 'it happens'... 'unfortuantely you can't pick her up or she'll have to be retrained'...
