Deep fryer? Help!
My DH wants a deep fryer. I don't think I can get what I want in time for Father's day, but his birthday is early July.
This is an ongoing discussion/joke in our home. ONGOING. Any recommendations or suggestions? Or does anyone actually deep fry in a pot? He's watched too many cooking shows. |

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
Have you tried deep frying in your house before? I’ve done it in a pot a couple of times and you and your kitchen get covered in oil. And the oil gets expensive.

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
No, and this is one of my concerns!
I remember my mom had some deep fryer pot thing when we were growing up, and the smell of it hung around. But it made the BEST fries. ---------- Post added at 11:49 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:48 AM ---------- I'd be probably happier with an air fryer. |

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
Just me, and this may not be an issue in your house. But, if a deep fryer came into my house, I would emphatically state--
The first time I wind up cleaning oil from multiple surfaces after it is used, is the day that fryer gets donated. I would not budge on that rule. I hate cleaning up oil/grease. And I live with people who have a habit of cleaning up 25% of their mess and then going to bed. |

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
One of my favorite cookbook authors, Marcella Hazan, wrote that she feels most comfortable in the kitchen when she's frying. I remember thinking, "Seriously? Why??" But she was inspiring enough to get me to try it.
Every couple of years I deep fry something for a special occasion - falafel for a Birthday dinner, donuts for someone's Science Fair experiment, that sort of thing. We use a dutch oven or other deep pot with a thermometer, watch the temp closely (too hot and it splatters more) and cover with a splatter screen. The screen dramatically reduces the mess. I only do it when I am prepared to clean up, though. My family is like Lisa's, but 25% might be generous.

Get an air fryer instead?

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
If you get an air fryer, get the biggest capacity you can. I have an air fryer lid for the Instant Pot and I like it but the capacity isn’t nearly big enough to use it for actual meal sized dishes.

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
We have a deep fryer. We use it rarely but it's really nice when we do use it. The lid keeps the grease contained. The oil is expensive but we also recycle it aka use it again or lately using it for firestarter in our firepit.
We made fried fish and onion rings most recently. So good! That said, it was definitely a dh purchase and not something I'd care to own if not for him. Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
That is what has stopped me from getting one. If I'm going to make french fries for 7 or whatever, I don't want to do it in 3-4 batches. And I don't know if I'd use it enough to justify one of the big ones.

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
We use our air fryer 3-4 times a week, minimum. I thought we'd use it once a month, if that. Tater tots, fries, rewarming things, heating up veggie meats, etc.

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
I would only want a deep fryer used outside.
As for air fryers - yes, the biggest one you have space for. Unfortunately for me we don't have space for one as big as I would like to have. It's still handy.

Re: Deep fryer? Help!
So...I found one that does BOTH!
It's a combination air and deep fryer. We have used it as an air fryer 2 nights in a row (amazing french fries!), and we did a deep fry of gluten free donuts tonight. All wins! |
