Re: Garden Planning
Esperanza-- did you buy "garden soil?" That should be mixed with native soil, usually 50/50.
Squash are super easy to grow. Watermelon aren't. You don't have to buy/build a raised bed if you don't want to. You can dug up the turf/lawn (that's the hard part) and then turn the soil, mixing in the garden soil. West facing is good! Both squash and watermelon need full sun. We've planted lettuce, kale, spinach, tomatoes, peas, snow peas, cucumbers, and dill. We already had asparagus, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, apples, and cherries. Hoping to find tomatillo plants. Those did really well last time and were so yummy. I didn't get tanglefoot on my fruit trees in time so I'll be spraying neem oil all season. The moose like to eat my cherry tree. Oh, I also have a grape vine! It's not that big yet but I'm expecting grapes this year. |

Re: Garden Planning
I'm probably the last person to give gardening advice because even though I love it, I'm rarely successful. How many seedlings of each do you have? I like square foot gardening and so if you've got big enough and deep enough pots some of those might work in a similar way - beans, carrots, radishes. Squash and watermelon need a bigger space. Cucumbers you can get by with a smaller space if you have something for the vines to climb on, so make the cucumbers climb up rather than sprawl out on the ground. You could google square foot gardening as I find it a simple way to garden. It worked really, really well for me the first year I began gardening.

Re: Garden Planning
We plant cucumbers and beans along the fence and they climb up.
DH has seedlings under grow lights on the porch. He started the tomatoes in March and they look great! We've got lots of Mediterranean veggies going, and I'm trying to remember to start lettuces every week so that we can have a continuous supply throughout the summer. We usually plant Memorial Day weekend, too.

Re: Garden Planning
We got a couple bags of fertilizer and soil and another box, and rearranged the other ones so they are a bit longer, to essentially be 4'x12' and 4'x8'.
I need to rent a mantis or find one to borrow so we can turn the dirt up better and mix it properly. I need to take the mint out and find someplace else to plant it. I might try to put it alongside the shed since nobody sprayed there I don't think (neighbor guy tried to be helpful and spray weeds along the back of the house last year so that's not gonna be a safe spot yet to plant them). We are for sure doing lettuce, try for some spring mix/mixed greens for DD2s turtle to eat, some beans since they did so well last year, and carrots, and probably try tomatoes again, see if we can get them better this year. Peppers and onions too I think, and maybe some broccoli? Not sure, I have to check my seeds. We just had a frost last week so we tend to wait til a bit later towards Memorial Day to plant. Re: Garden Planning
Oh yes, rhubarb! We harvested about a 3/4 gallon, going to harvest more this week.. We started with 1 medium size plant. Now we have 2 massive plants and one medium. Going to split the massive ones again this year. So excited for rhubarb pie!
---------- Post added at 11:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:25 AM ---------- I always forget we have chives, too. They spread a lot, too. We also have wild strawberries, wild thimbleberries, wild ginger (not actual ginger but can be used just like ginger), and wild oregon grapes. We have to go hiking to find huckleberries and elderberries. I'm going to plant elderberries one of these days. |

Re: Garden Planning
Lisa, what do you do with all your rhubarb? I have a couple of rhubarb LOVERS and a couple of rhubarb dislikers... So it's a mixed bag here. I make a lot of rhubarb cake and muffins. Done a few pies but truthfully since I have two gluten intolerant children, I don't do pie very often....
I freeze it to make cakes and muffins throughout the year too... But still have more than I can use.

Re: Garden Planning
This is a great gluten free pie crust recipe from LilacPhoenix. Now you can have pie, 2sunshines! I know it only makes a bottom crust so maybe you could make a gf crumble for the top. I think the same recipe would work for that just dabbing it on top in crumbles. I haven't tried that so if you do, will you please let me know how it turns out?

Re: Garden Planning
I recently saw this recipe for rhubarb fool (basically rhubarb compote swirled with whipped cream) in one of Nigella Lawson's cookbooks. I want to try it this year. http://www.easytoswallow.co.uk/rhubarb-fool.html

Re: Garden Planning
My dad grew rhubarb when I was a kid. My mom made lots of Strawberry-Rhubarb pies. (She's a fabulous pie baker.) I don't think I've had it since then! That fool looks yummy enough that I'm thinking about where to plant some.

Re: Garden Planning
The asparagus we planted our first year at our house is growing this year! The chives are taking off and over as usual. The onions are going well and the rhubarb is massive as usual. I guess I need to split it--I didn't know I could.
We finally got our plants bought. I bought 30ish new strawberry plants, a flat of various tomato plants, and some celery. In addition to the usual assortment of annuals. Over the last 2 summers, I've been concentrating on getting in some perennials. I bought a mosquito plant and some fox glove to add in to our border. I need to get rid of the tulip plants that aren't producing anymore. Maybe toss in some new bulbs.

Re: Garden Planning
Hmm, my chives don't spread and I've had them there for several years now and it just comes back each year as a small plant. I wonder why mine don't spread.
