Dd and bottoming out blood sugar
Dd has really awful boughts of low blood sugar. If we forget to get food into her every couple of hours, she can quickly spiral into a raging, screaming mess. If this happens, as soon as we get some sugar into her, she stabilizes and is perfectly normal and rational. But of course the ups and downs are not good for her.
She is a very picky eater, and very carb dependent. I try to get protein and good fats into her at every meal and snack, which helps obviously, but she doesn't always cooperate. We eat low sugar in general. She is quite small and thin for her age, 7.5 and 40 pounds. Suggestions?

Does she like a variety of drinks? Could you try adding coconut oil and/or collagen protein to Smoothies? Dips?
Have you tried homemade Lara bars and stirred in a variety of good things? What is her typical snack/meal?

My son is like this too.
I asked doc if this meant diabetes in the future. Is it part of her bigger picture? Or just another hard thing?

Re: Dd and bottoming out blood sugar
The key is trtyng to wean offf the blatant carbs because as you now it raises blood sugar which makes for a crash. Easier said than done somtimes. If you can make a list of thing she will eat and tell her it isnt good for her body to just eat (whatever carb)and that is why she feels bad smetimes. Involve her in telling you which proteins she would eat and which fruits and vegies. Apples with peanut butter, that kind of thing. Probiotics may help. Plain yogurt with a sweet fruit like banana? The smoothie with cocnut oil is a good idea

Re: Dd and bottoming out blood sugar
I'm a big believer in smoothies. You can get a lot of nut butters and coconut oil into smoothies for staying power. You can put coconut oil on lots of things. If she'll dip her snacks, that helps, too. Graham crackers, for instance, are high in carbs but if you can make a nut-butter-based dip she'll eat, that can help.
I wouldn't worry too much about the actual glycemic index since a lot of it is old science and not done very well, but the concept of adding fat and protein to everything (and avoiding a lot of simple sugars) will help keep her sugars stable. I think Rene's idea of checking her sugars and getting medical attention is good, too.

Has she tried avocados? If you can afford them they make a good healthy fat snack

Re: Dd and bottoming out blood sugar
Would those energy bites work that are made with oats and peanut butter (or another nut butter) ?
