Making vanilla

I wasn't sure the best forum to ask this in...but this is kind of a *creating* thing.....

So, I know in the past people have made vanilla to give as gifts. I finally have some vanilla beans coming to me, thanks to Blue Savannah

, so tell me what I need to know.

Links for tutorials....tricks you learned from doing it yourself...and as for the vodka, I will need very, very specific info on what kind. Not a drinker here, so I have absolutely NO CLUE what to get in regards to that!

So, really, tell me all you know!

I hope Crystal will reply because she has a specific alcohol that she uses that's gluten free and I can't remember what it is!

you're not too late...last year I started mine in Sept. It sat for 10 weeks & turned out great!
ETA: I'll see if I can find an old link I used to make mine...I used whole vanilla beans & kept them in the bottle...I think the directions said it should take at LEAST 8 weeks...

I ordered clear bottles...in a 5 oz size. I had them shipped to my mom in the states to save shipping....but they have to arrive in TX in a week, so she can bring them to me when she comes for a visit!

Do the bottles have to be food grade or does that only apply to plastic?

There are varying qualities. Dried out ones will work but won't be as vanillay. Frontier is a good place reportedly to order them. Some countries are known for better vanilla than others, though I'm not sure which are in the elite

I got mine from Costco and have been pleased with them, even though they aren't "special"

My vanilla is just in a mason jar.
