problems with camera memory card, wwyd?
We have an older point and shoot camera that uses xD memory cards. Up until Sunday, no problems with the camera or cards, other than the fact that those cards aren't made anymore. We recently filled a 1GB card, and I purchased a new card off of ebay, setting the other filled card aside.
Sunday I went to download Easter pictures to my computer and was surprised to see that the computer said there were not pictures on the (second) camera card! Looong story short, I ended up shelling out way too much money to have a local camera store get the pictures off of BOTH memory cards. Both cards were showing no pictures on them, even though they had both taken pictures and hadn't had any previous problems. I asked what could have caused this and was told it could be from a corrupt file drive. They told me to reformat the cards and try using them again. I'm afraid this will happen again, and I can't keep paying that kind of money to get the pictures off! At the same time, each card is $20 and not easy to find anymore. I have no idea why there would be problems on both cards. Nothing in common, other than used in the same camera but the last time I put the first card in, it was completely fine. All pictures are downloaded through a card reader. I really, really don't want to have to get a new camera. We don't have money to do that right now. But it's really important that I can get good pictures of ds, and neither of our phones has a very good camera. We can borrow my mom's old camera for a while, which is great. Any idea what could be going on? Will reformatting the card prevent this kind of problem again or could this repeat itself? Should I get a new card again?

Re: problems with camera memory card, wwyd?
Can you reformat and then test the cards - take a few pictures that don't mean anything to you, and see if they'll download to the computer? Until you feel like you can depend on your card(s), you're going to be nervous about using them. Maybe the guy is right and reformatting them will make everything work fine. The worst that can happen is that you reformat and do a few test runs and discover that the card(s) aren't going to work. And better to find out they aren't working now than to find out after you've taken a lot of really nice pictures that you have to pay someone to retrieve for you.
If you find out the cards won't work, you can decide what to do about it then. |
