Ring slings for newborns
A couple of people have commented that they don't feel ring slings are safe or secure for newborns.
I truly do not understand this. I find them to be *excellent* carriers for newborns. The comments were something about bending the necks. Can someone explain how they're wearing and what they see as being the problem? |

Re: Ring slings for newborns
I think it's cradle position vs. upright tummy to tummy.
I think cradle is so dangerous. I never carried my kids like that. nursing is different - you nurse and then pop them back up again. |

Re: Ring slings for newborns
I loved my ring sling for my newborn, but I could not find a way to do the cradle hold that wouldn't have their chins forced into their chests. Instead I did an upright hold where baby was against my chest.

Re: Ring slings for newborns
I LOVE tummy to tummy with a newbie. I was always careful to check her breathing and make sure she was in there right. I'd cradle to nurse, then pop her back upright.

Re: Ring slings for newborns
I prefer tummy-to-tummy as well. Actually, cradle done properly is pretty darn safe too--the trick is that most people just put baby in sideways. You start in t2t, and then shift baby's bum sideways, so that they're lying diagonally across the fabric and baby's head stays at the top rail. You should be able to completely support the spine and keep the airway plenty open.
I agree that lying a baby in cradle along the length of the fabric is wildly unsafe... |

Re: Ring slings for newborns
Upright, I absolutely love RS for newborns.
I've rarely been able to get a good cradle carry that felt safe to me, aside from nursing.

Re: Ring slings for newborns
I just plain old dont like the cradle position. I only tried it for nursing and was so all over the place I just gave up.
But ds spent the better portion of his babyhood in a tummy to tummy snuggle in the ring sling It only made me nervous in the first few weeks when he was soooo bitty and it was all new to me. I was pretty obsessive about making sure he wasn't tucked in on himself. Definitely, though, by the time he was 3 months, his head rested all the way up out of the sling where he could look around, and if he fell asleep (which was all the time), it was with his head angled so his face was looking up towards me and flopped on my chest. It was so easy to see his airway and know he was breathing. |

I love my rs, but I would never do cradle hold. It is too hard to position. Tummy to tummy is how we live the first several months. I'll pop them down to nurse, but then right back up again when they're done.

Re: Ring slings for newborns
Wow, I've never thought about it being dangerous? Mine (the last three anyway) all had their favorite ways to be in the sling. And it's funny because the way they liked best was also the most natural for me to put them in. And it was different for all three of them!
Julianna loved basically "standing up" with the sling just holding her close to me. Her legs, or at least one leg was straight down and her body totally vertical. Evie loved the cradle position, but she layed down pretty flat. There was never any trouble with her head or cutting off her airway. The only trouble was that I"d forget she was in there Penelope loves being semi sideways. One leg froggied and the other around my side, facing sideways. She hates nursing in the sling! But because she's froggied in there she is such a tiny little ball of nothing |

Re: Ring slings for newborns
Another anti-cradle hold for anything but active nursing. I actually think any responsible ring sling maker should flat out state NOT to use the cradle hold with newborns.
Otherwise, I think the upright, tummy to tummy hold in a ring sling does an excellent job of mimicing the womb and calming newborns. The baby's head is right below your chin, they are breathing with you - very safe IMO

When i went to the babywearing conference last summer, Jan from Sleeping Baby Productions took one of those horrid recalled bag slings and used it to get a proper carry. She then took one of her own slings and showed how it could be used to improperly carry the baby and not protect the airway.
It was a powerful demonstration. Babywearing is a skill. A sling is a piece of cloth with two rings that can be used in a multitude of ways. "Protect the airway" was the big safety push at the conference. Slings can be made as safely as possible, but positioning is everything. |

Re: Ring slings for newborns
I only used tummy to tummy also. I think it's important to remember that newborns can end up with their chin on their chests in other ways too--bouncy seat, swing, snuggling on someone's chest. The basic safety take away point that I try to mak when I discuss this with someone is that newborns chins should not be on their chests no matter where they are.

I would have loved to see that. I think the general population does not understand that Babywearing is a skill. It is something that one must learn to do properly. I see countless people babywearing incorrectly, even in something simple like a Bjorn. I am not a huge fan of the cradle hold for a newborn, in a ring sling. I never felt confident enough doing it, I always wanted to prop them up with my arm which then kind of defeated the whole point of the sling in the first place. |
