"Externalizing behaviors"
I was reading a woman's discussion of the various studies of spanking. She kept using the term "externalizing behaviors," such as "harsh spanking had immediate effect on compliance but not on externalizing behaviors in the long term."

Re: "Externalizing behaviors"
Found this definition: "Externalizing behaviors are negative behaviors that are directed toward the external environment" and this: "In short, they are actions that direct problematic energy outward." And also this: "This article is concerned with childhood externalizing behavior, a behavioral problem that is a major risk factor for later juvenile delinquency, adult crime, and violence....The construct of externalizing behavior problems refers to a grouping of behavior problems that are manifested in children’s outward behavior and reflect the child negatively acting on the external environment."
And contrasted with internalizing behaviors: "Internalizing behaviors are negative, problematic behaviors that are directed toward the self. People with internalizing behaviors have difficulty coping with negative emotions or stressful situations, so they direct their feelings inward." So, what I'm getting from all that is that "externalizing behaviors" are where a child/person takes out their inability to cope with their problems/environment on their external environment. IOW, they take out their inability to deal with their problems on others. "Aggression, delinquency, and hyperactivity" were three key categories of externalizing behaviors in a paper I found. (Whereas internalizing behaviors are where someone takes out their inability to cope with their problems on themselves - they turn their pain and frustration inwardly instead of outwardly.) So your quote is basically saying that spanking may solve the immediate problem, in that it can change a non-compliant child to a compliant child in the short-term. But it doesn't do anything to help kids manage their pain and anger and behavior in the long-term, particularly in the area of acting out as a means of (not) coping with problems.

Re: "Externalizing behaviors"
Forty-two, you are awesome. That was so helpful! Thank you for taking the time to type all that out!
Ok, so it was stuff I already knew, then. But I learned a new term!
