I'm thinking of getting a Berkey water free finally

I'm looking at the Big Berkey. How often do you need to change the filters? Does it use one filter at a time? Is water left on the counter for 2-3 days still safe to drink or is that taken care of in the filtration system?

Which Berkey do you have and are you happy with that one?

Ours is one of the smaller ones. Your filters are good for 5-10 years and need cleaned once a month or so.

I have the Light. I like being able to see when it needs refilling.

We use it for the dogs, cooking, indoor plants, and drink a ton of water. I refill it about twice a day. I haven't replaced my black filters yet and we've had it 3 years. I have the fluoride filters also and those need to be replaced every year.

) but I assume you are talking about a house water filter? We are looking into getting one of those in the next year.

We have the one that's a little less than 3 gallons. We've had it about 18 months and have not changed the filter yet. Cleaned it maybe 2-3 times, it needs to be cleaned again I think. I refill it every other day in the winter, every day in the summer.

We have the Royal Berkey. I should probably clean the filters. I should probably look up how to clean the filters.

For our family of 6 using it for drinking water, a perpetual crockpot of chicken broth, making kombucha, and a decent amount of coffee, it's adequate, but I have to remember to refill it twice a day, which means it sometimes runs dry.

If you get the flouride filters, they need to be replaced every 6 months to a year, depending on how often you fill it.

I really want to get one as well. It's just my husband and I and our 10 month old. Could we get away with getting one of the smaller ones? How do you clean it?

There was 3 ppl in our home when we got the light (2.5gal) and my parents have the same size but the chrome.....3 ppl in their house. I would not recommend going smaller. I would actually like to have a second for the second story for night time. Lol

I love the thought of having several Berkeys around the house. My two older boys have the lower level to themselves. I often buy them the big jugs of arrowhead or cases of water so they drink more. I might consider going smaller but getting several.

I've been planning to get a Big Berkey. Since we moved months ago I've been lugging water home from the grocery store and it's getting old.

One thing I was wondering was how much fluoride is it able to remove? It's added to our city water here and I've read it only takes out a fraction. I want as much of it gone as possible.

If you get the flouride filters (they are an add on) then it is supposed to remove all of the flouride plus a few other things.

They stopped adding it to our local water, so we have not been using them.

Funny this should pop up today. I'm passing our Big Berkey on to a friend. We have a Royal for our family now. Since we are on a community well, I mostly use it for ferments that need unchlorinated water. Our chlorine levels are fine for drinking, just a tad too high for my microbes to be happy.

The filters are the $$ part of owning a Berkey. I don't clean my nearly as often as others. I feel like it is a pain because I want my kitchen counter and sink super clean before I scrub them.

How often do you replace filters?
I've had my Berkey for 5 or 6 years & have bought filters once (and jyst added them in with the old ones to full all the places for filters).
