Pickle Q

I want sweet pickles. I love them. However, 100% of them that I've found in the store have HFCS in them.

Well, the pickling agent, I should say.

After talking to dh about that, we agreed to have a small garden next year so I can grow cucumbers.

We all like cukes and pickles. But I want sweet pickles and relish now. :hissy

So...if I buy cucumbers at the store, will those be okay to pickle so we can have pickles? Then, too, I can try pickling to see if it's anything I have the attention span to do.

(I've seen tiny cukes that would work just fine.)

Has anyone pickled a store bought cuke?

People do it all the time.

Ideally, you want to find "pickling" cucumbers. Pickling cukes are different from eating cukes. They have been bred to have traits that give you a crisper pickle - smaller size, fewer seeds, thinner skin, etc.

I make awesome relish (imho

), but it's made from green tomatoes, sweet peppers and onions.

If you're only trying to stay away from the HFCS, there are recipes for "repickling" dills into sweets and they're awesome

They are kind of sweet and savory. You start with store bought dills. I used to make them, but haven't in several years.
