Ok so I’m Still Laughing a bit

Females are the only species who reproduce.

I want that on a teeshirt. I can't even tell you why except that it's amazing. A lot like the question I once read asking "is garlic in the meat group?"

Giving feedback to that one sentence was painful.

All issues I pointed out - that that ability to reproduce is one of the defining characteristics of life and that males reproduce, but do not carry and birth the young. Thank goodness I'm a homeschool mom and have taught biology three times over.

There are other gems, like "this is true of all the following reasons I stated before" Seems I'm GTAing a class where logic goes to die.

On the up side, those that went down the list and just answered the questions get full credit within minutes and long distance blessings.

Oh gracious ((((hug)))) this must be so hard for you.

when I’ve proofed peoples papers from work my eyes twitch and I’d refuse to do anything beyond “punctuation and grammar in regards to spelling and verb tense etc) and then circle spots that were really .... obviously not good and put “rewrite” and tell them I’m not one to be able to fix that for them. I usually suggest an English major or TA to help them. My adult
Kid whose in college now had a friend w an English major Proof all college papers and only charge like 15/paper. Coworkers come
to me cuz apparently my professional emails are concise to the point and thorough and I have an extremely broad vocabulary LOL (which is opposite of my brain and my gcm rambles) and these are very very bright RNs with associates finishing their bachelors or bachelors and pursuing their masters. Ironically I have no post secondary degree even an associates lololol

Default Re: College - advice from the other side....

The trouble with correcting those sorts of things is that it isn’t only a writing problem or a grammar problem. There is a problem with clarity of thinking, even misunderstanding of basic terminology. I doubt they could explain their arguments coherently out loud, either. It begs the question of how they got through all those classes before senior year.

---------- Post added at 01:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:03 PM ----------

I think that homeschooling can help prevent these problems just because of the one-on-one nature of instruction. The children probably have to speak in complete sentences more often than they would in a classroom.

And this sort of thing
Quote:
this is true of all the following reasons I stated before
might be happening in seventh grade, but if dealt with then and required to be corrected every single time, should be gone before they get to college.

I fully agree . I think my dysgraphia kid did so well cuz his logic was developed orally . I taught him to
Record himself doing a “speech on the topic without looking at it bad transpose it.

But that’s why I didn’t do more than “rewrite” cuz I taught that organically and don’t know where to start when editing LOL I’m not an editor

I often suggest that students read their papers aloud to catch problems - or read it to someone else who can stop them when things don't make sense. I came across one last night that I don't think that would have helped. The overall consistency in their work suggested they likely do speak the way they wrote. I recommended the campus writing center instead.

Another irony is that the last two poorly written papers were guys - this is a women's health course - so they are out of their natural element from the start.

I'm not sure what you mean. You required them to have someone else review their paper first? What were you teaching?

I’ve taught essay writing at our homeschool co-op for more years than I care to count, and I taught it at a public high school before that. It is SO necessary and so often over-looked. There’s also an issue of time for the public school teacher. If they have 125 students each day, to give feedback and personal instruction just isn’t feasible.

Elizabeth, I feel your pain.

Yes. Their papers were peer-reviewed before I looked at them. I taught high school English 20 years ago.

My college composition professor required peer-reviewed papers, and I thought he was brilliant. It drastically reduced his load. By the time he saw it, it was C worthy. Several of my classmates were football players who were quite happy with a C. Their first drafts were F material.
