Need super easy "gift quality" crafts ideas for adults with disabilities...
The special needs ministry I work with is doing a service project from October- December. At our October meeting I need a craft idea that my participants can work together to make in order to pack care packages in December.
So, the crafts are going to be packed into care packages for adults with disabilities who live in group homes. I will have about 30 people (all of whom have special needs themselves) making the gifts but we only need to make 10 items total. I was kind of thinking those "no-sew" fleece blankets that you just knot all around the edge would be right on par with what we need. Most the people who come to our meetings are pretty limited in their ability to make things. Tie knots, coloring, gluing, placing stickers is kind of where their abilities are. Some can bead, but not all can. Blankets would also be appropriate care package gifts for men and women with disabilities. Those knotted blankets are just so ugly though. Is there anything along those lines that is less ugly? (I think the ones where you weave the edges with a crochet hook would be too much for my participants to make.) We live in New England so we have cold winters. But I think making 10 no-sew hats will not make enough projects for my whole group to get a chance to help make them....although we could make more than 10 and donate the excess to a homeless shelter. Any other ideas?? Last edited by WaitPatientlyOnTheLord; 09-08-2016 at 03:14 PM. |

FWIW, I don't think those no-sew blankets are ugly; in fact, I think they are perfect for your project.

If you can find solid colored ones they are less ugly.

What about making some of those mixes in jars? Like cookie or soup mixes. It would involve measuring/counting ingredients, so maybe too complex?

Could the blankets be made into pet beds by shrinking down and filling with fluff?
Rolled beeswax candles? |

We have some for the pet crate that are made like no sew blankets. Would be smaller than a lap blanket. No filling in ours.

At this time our outreach project is set to be for those group homes. Were already committed. But pet beds are a sweet idea to keep in mind for the future.
Rolled candles could be nice. I know they wouldnt be allowed to burn them in their group homes but if they smelled nice. |

I think you can use that same new sew fleece concept to make throw pillows as well.

Bath salts in jars? Optional food coloring to make the salt pretty, optional scent or scattering of flower petals. The jar lids can be decorated with stickers, ribbons, paint, squares of fabric - anything, really.
