Good to know. We probably won't actually do Chipotle but a chain we have that is like it but no one has ever heard of it so I don't mention it by name since it's kinda local.

If you and your husband are in agreement on "no Halloween" then I think you should stick to it.

But I'd also make it a part of your family life to do things with their friends. I have a big-ish family so I know it can be hard and expensive, unless you plan thoughtfully. Just from my experience, though, if your children see two separate worlds -- family vs friends, that may turn into heartache when they're teens. Teens live and breathe for their friendships. If you don't set the trend now that their friends are a welcome part of family life, they may choose friends over family entirely in a few years.

And this isn't because you don't observe Halloween but just your comment that you really don't do anything to welcome their friends into your family life.

Movies and popcorn
Hiking
Cookie baking
Homework club
Board games

All really cheap ideas. And you can make your kids plan and clean up and stick to the budget you give them.
