House plants. What do you have? I want to learn how to care for mine better.
I have a tiny spider plant I recently bought because I used to have one and like them. And have 4 Pothos.
Like this https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/hou...plant-care.htm They are all doing fine but I think I need to add more soil and have been wondering about fertilizer. I hate to buy that neon blue/green Miracle Grow. I have watered with a water/epsom salt mix before. ---------- Post added at 05:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:04 PM ---------- Going to look for this next time I go to Walmart. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Espoma-Or...&wl13=&veh=sem

I have Philodendron hanging right outside the front door. This way, I remember to water it when I see it looking peaked.

Re: House plants. What do you have? I want to learn how to care for mine better.
I don't have as many as I used to (darn cats) but I'm a plant person.
Most people whose plants die and they don't know the cause, it's from over-watering. People that under-water know they under-water. Very few plants can stand sitting in constantly wet soil. So, my best houseplant advice is to let the soil dry out thoroughly between waterings, unless you have one of those plants that loves wet feet. Which is unlikely. If you have succulents, water even less frequently. Spider plants are in the lily family and their roots grow tubers, just like lilies. The tubers will rot if the soil is kept moist. So let the soil dry out. I prefer a granular, slow release fertilizer. You put in in the soil when you re-pot or just on top of the soil if you don't need to re-pot. It slowly releases with every watering. I love Epsoma products for my outdoor gardening. I haven't tried any of their products for indoor plants, though. But I would if they had the type of product I needed. If you are looking for a plant that will survive in almost any condition, look for a ZZ plant. I think they're gorgeous and they will grow fastest in sun but will do fine with low light and neglect, too. ---------- Post added at 10:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:05 AM ---------- What's wrong with your orchid? |

Pothos plants! I have 3 of them and prior to this moment had no clue what they were called. Thanks!
I have lots of house plants and certainly do not consider myself good at maintaining them. But somehow most of them do survive. Not all tho.... However I have found my pothos to be most resilient! Even when they've come to the point of their almost death bed they seem to bounce back. Anyway, all that to say that I'm watching this thread for more advice.

Re: House plants. What do you have? I want to learn how to care for mine better.
I'm pretty sure my Pothos recently died because it needed a bigger pot Its roots were allllllll wrapped up around the base of the pot when I upturned it into the compost pile. Partly that was just a lack of houseplant experience at recognizing why it started to fade, but I was also nervous that I would cause some major stress by re-potting Is that an overblown fear?

Re: House plants. What do you have? I want to learn how to care for mine better.
I have a spider plant, two snake plants, three different kinds of aloe (and their pups which have been potted separately), a ficus, a Christmas cactus, a pothos and a plant I don't remember the name of that needs low light.
Then there's the plant in one of my hanging baskets that keeps dropping new plants on my floor. I put them in water and they get roots so I have about four new ones around from that larger plant. It's similar looking to the spider plant except it's all green and my spider plant has never given me any new plants. I just don't know the name. They've all been in good condition and growing as long as they get enough light. I water most of them once or twice a week at the most. For the bigger plants I have water globes and that has worked well. I have been trying to sprout an avocado plant for months with no success. Many years ago I had a lipstick plant which I loved. It seemed to have flowers almost all the time. I haven't found one since but when I do it's coming home with me. I noticed with my snake plants you have to almost neglect it to get it to grow a flower stalk. It's very low maintenance and spreads quickly. |

I tend to over water, that's how I killed my aloe plant. Now I'm trying to grow 3 aloe babies. Had them down low and my cat was messing with them. I think they need better light, which they had but my cat was spilling dirt from them, not harming the plants though. He doesn't bother the Pothos that is down low that it was next too.
