Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
"because it has more vitamins!"
Same thing with the candy disguised as breakfast cereal disguised as candy ( Reese Puffs, Cookie Crisp, etc.) The box says it's whole grain and an excellent source of vitamins and calcium so it must be just as good or better than other breakfast things. So how do I explain to him that pop-tarts, despite their "vitamins" are junk food not breakfast!?

Point out sugar content? And if you buy bread then check to see if it lists what vitamins it naturally contains?

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
Those artificial vitamins are very poorly absorbed. They mostly pass through and are useless to the human body. The Pop Tarts also lack the fiber of whole grains and the huge amount of sugar and other crap they contain is terrible for you!

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
He didn't think there was that much sugar in them. I guess that's the sort of thing he was used to eating growing up. I think he's getting a bit of a wake up call though. His dad was just diagnosed with severe diabetes (like they couldn't believe he was still alive his numbers were so bad!)
How can you tell from the label which vitamins are natural? I guess any of them that aren't included in the ingredient list, right?

I dunno, if you're going to put jelly or something on the toast, the only difference I see is processed food vs less processed food. It's still carbs and sugar.

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
Pop Tarts have virtually NO natural vitamins. They are made from white flour (from which all the nutritious parts of the whole wheat berry have been removed), sugar, fat, and 2% or less of fruit IF they are even fruit flavored to begin with.
Oh yeah, and preservatives and artificial coloring. ---------- Post added at 10:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:13 AM ---------- Link for convenience: http://www.kelloggs.com/en_US/produc...-pastries.html

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
I wish I could find the picture but a friend's daughter did a science project for school. Using sandwich bags she created visuals of sugar content for a variety of food choices. Maybe something like that would help?
It's tough. We've been sent so many mixed messages about what healthy is irt food. |

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
The strawberry Pop Tarts I looked up contain 16 grams of sugar. One teaspoon of sugar weighs about 4 grams so one strawberry Pop Tart has the equivalent of 4 teaspoons of sugar. NOT a good way to start the day!

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
I think it depends on the toast and jelly. For example, 100% whole grain toast and a spreadable fruit jam w/ no sugar would be better.

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
I read the ingredient list to DH, and emphasize all the words that are hard to pronounce (tetrasodim pyrophosephate anyone?), usually followed by a short reading of the simple/wholesome ingredients on the bread/jam I buy.

If he likes pop tarts, you can try sprouted bread with butter, almond butter or cream cheese, and sliced strawberries.

Re: Dh thinks Pop-tarts are "healthier" than whole wheat toast...
Pop tarts are, hands down, my very favorite breakfast food. Right out of the little foil bag is fine, but out of the toaster, and they are DIVINE.
I haven't eaten one in probably 6 years, but I sit here salivating and yearning. My husband responded best to seeing the visual aids of how many teaspoons of sugar make up that those "grams." He dropped soda immediately, even though I'd been telling him for YEARS. Also helps to have a guy friend telling him the same thing. It doesn't count when only the wifey is saying it. |
