Vegan Sugar

Hey guys, Maybe most of you vegan vets probably already know this, but when DH and I were in Whole Foods, we noticed they had Vegan sugar.

Being somewhat new to all this, DH asked an employee, what made the sugar vegan? The employee went into great detail, and explained to us that sugar is generally ran through a machine with animal bones, to pretty-up the color and make the sugar look more attractive. The vegan sugar is not ran over the animal bones.

We thought this was very intresting and just wanted to pass on this info. Any other info that anyone might have regardfing this info first hand, please share!

Generally, if a sugar is Kosher it's also vegan.

Its a bit more complicated. Cane sugar is processed to white through a filter. Sometimes the filter is charcoal. Sometimes that charcoal is made from bone char. Beet sugar is never made this way. However, the charcoal is so far removed from the original animals that sugar from this process is still considered kosher.

When I learned about all the processing that goes into white sugar, I have switched over to using raw sugar. I actually like the subtly different taste of it over white sugar too. But I do try to reduce our use of cane sugar.
