Crossing state lines with a minor
This weekend our Scout troop is driving to our summer camp location in another state. I'm assigned to drive my daughter plus one other girl. It's about a 8 hour drive.
The troop is being casual about driving arrangements. One leader will have all of the forms & such, but if I get pulled over, what do I need to have in my car that gives me permission to have this other girl in the car?

Re: Crossing state lines with a minor
Interesting. I don't know of anything that I am aware of. I have driven both boy and girl scouts across state lines and didn't have anything in my car (the leader had all paperwork with her/him in that car).
If there is something I am interested to know the procedure.

Re: Crossing state lines with a minor
Honestly, that would not be a worry on my mind at all.

Re: Crossing state lines with a minor
As long as the leader has the parental consent and emergency contact forms I think legally you are fine but might be a good idea to have a copy of that info yourself since you are in different vehicles and not together as a group in a van

Re: Crossing state lines with a minor
Things must be a lot different in the States. It wouldn't cross my mind to be concerned if we went into Quebec with extra kids or if our kids were with others. The only thing I'd want to make sure they had was their provincial health card. Otherwise …
If we were crossing into the U.S. that would be a completely different thing. It came up with rep hockey and passports (obviously for all) and notarized letters are required for kids / teens travelling without their own parents. Are there issues crossing into different states? |

I would absolutely make sure I had a note written and signed by the parent. I agree with PP about sex trafficking being a concern, and I also would just rather be safe than sorry in general and cover my own butt

Re: Crossing state lines with a minor
Well, here if a parent wants to fly alone with their own child it is best to bring a letter from the other parent stating knowledge and permission. Maybe something similar to ease your mind?

Re: Crossing state lines with a minor
The only time I have heard of any travel restriction was if the child was in a county/state foster care system which I assume isnt the case here or you would have said.

Re: Crossing state lines with a minor
I take kids without their parents on field trips all the time for my job. None of the kids look like they could be my biological children. If I have more than one vehicle transporting kids, I make sure the driver has the permission slips for the children riding in their vehicle. I know the liability issues are different with a company sponsored trip vs privately transporting children. If you're really worried, I would ask for a copy of the permission slips from the leader.

I am going to make my own permission slip to be signed by the parents of the girls I am taking, and also have a copy of the health forms and insurance cards in case of an emergency.

And with all of the concern here, in particular, about school permission forms etc. being used to vax children without parental consent? Again, I'd sign a permission form provided by an organization I trusted and could review, but not something a parent whipped up and handed me. For your own protection, I'd just share your concerns with leadership and ask them when forms will be signed and who will carry them. It might save you the headache of trying to come up with all of this yourself. The organization really should be looking after all of this for you. |
