Talking to be about HSing for 1st grade

Bit of background (with fussy baby in arms, sorry for typos/any lack of clarity): DS1 went to Kindergarten at PS this past year and absolutely loved it. It turned out to be a great experience, and I have no regrets about that. The problem is mainly with the school district. It's rapidly becoming a disaster, and so many stupid desicions are being made that are going to affect the kids in an extremely negative way. I don't want to send ds back, and the more I think about it, the more I realize just how much I still want to homeschool. For the first time, DH is so fed up with the district that he seems open to the idea, but he does still have concerns. So will you allow me to pick your brains, both about his worries and a few of my own questions?

--Our budget would be limited. We could add as we go, but our initial costs will have to be fairly low. I was looking at buying math and science curriculum and piecing together my own for the rest. What would that look like? Where do I even begin with lesson planning? I know me, and I know that to keep up my motivation, I do need to work with a general plan through the year, knowing vaguely what topics would be covered each week. I just need a starting point and I'm not quite sure how to plan so subjects go together somewhat. I'm a bit anal.

--For those who have HSed for 1st grade, what were your goals for your children that year? Any particular topics you really wanted to cover?

--History. I love history in all its forms, and I want to teach it from a young age, but where is best to begin? I know everyone will have a different opinion. I've seen some places recommend teaching American history first and working to others. I've seen others teach in reverse, others from early history to present-day.

--Supplies. Curriculum aside, what supplies have been most useful to you in teaching? I'm already seeing back-to-school sales starting up so I've been thinking about this more and more.

--Anyone HS with a new baby? How'd you do it? This is a big concern of dh's, and I'm a little worried about it too.

Anything else anyone can offer me would be great, too.
