Fabric Dye--help me figure out basics?
So now that I've been introduced to DYT, I'm leaning towards doing some fixes in my closet...Fabric dye seems to be the place to start but I'm and about it all. I'm starting with summer clothes because my BFF & I are escaping for just under a week on a cruise ship and I need something to wear in warm, sunny weather.
I have a HE-front loading washer--so that means no washer-method, right? I know that some of the stitching won't dye, so I'm factoring that into color choices (making sure a contrasting stitch could look intentional, rather than ridiculous). What about stuff that is already black? Is there reliable way to change it?

Bumping for the dyt dye mavens. I've only been brave enough for tea dyeing.

Re: Fabric Dye--help me figure out basics?
it depends on what kind of dye you will be doing-- what color/dyt clothes do you mostly have? what color will you be making them?
if you have primarily dyt 1 in your closet, but are a 3, you could just do a coffee or tea bath. if you are a dyt 1, but have mostly 4's in your closet, you are gonna struggle with dying most of it (except the white)

Re: Fabric Dye--help me figure out basics?
I'm a 2: I have a lot of 1 & 4 and only a touch of 3.
I've got some T1-colored shorts that I want to make navy. I got Navy Rit dye, but haven't taken the plunge on actually DOING it yet. Is there anything I can do to "fix" my blacks to a T2 tone?

Rit makes a color remover that may work to fade your blacks. I don't know if there is a way to control the final color though. I haven't tried it myself.

Re: Fabric Dye--help me figure out basics?
Dharma trading company makes great cotton fabric dye. Fiber reactive dye is great because it doesn't bleed once it is rinsef out. RIT will continue to bleed. Scouring is important to get oils & whatnot out of fabric & ensure a more even dye job. Scouring is basically getting fabric as hot as possible, boiling preferrably with soda ash (washing soda) and a little dawn. Polyester thread and fabric won't take fiber reactive dye.

Re: Fabric Dye--help me figure out basics?
The shorts are a cotton/stretchy stuff blend (just Old Navy 5'' shorts from last season)...
Is that going to be a problem?

Re: Fabric Dye--help me figure out basics?
I only really know about the fiber reactive dyes that work on cotton. I think idye is supposed to work on polyester but I'm not sure if it's better than RIT. What % cotton are the shorts?
http://www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/id...y-fabrics.html If the shorts are 95% cotton or something I'd probably just get a pack of tulip or dylon & go for it. If you plan on dyeing more I'd get the concentrated dye from dharma. Tulip & Dylon already have soda ash added & you can find them at Walmart in the craft section, or any craft store by the t-shirts & fabric paint.

anything that isn't 100% cotton is a risk in dying. "man made" fibers like polyester and spandex require a different dye and dyeing technique then cotton. so if you dye shorts that are 80% cotton you just won't get a truly even dye job. esp if you consider you are trying to overdye (dyeing already colored/dyed fabric)
