Anyone knowledgeable about vintage (not antique) Singer sewing machines?
I have my grandmother's Singer Slant-O-Matic. I've had it for 6 years. I've never used it. I'm not "crafty" but I did learn basic machine & hand sewing as a kid.

What do you want to know? I'm not super familiar with that particular machine, but I can try.

Re: Anyone knowledgeable about vintage (not antique) Singer sewing machines?
Um, everything.
I'll be brave and open the thing this week and come back with a specific question. My eldest wants to start machine sewing. When I first got it, after my grandmother died, I joined a Yahoo group for Slant-O-Matic owners. Apparently, it's one of the best Singer ever made. My grandmother used it for 40 some years, almost until she died. It would be easier to just go buy a new, idiot-proof basic machine, but it's important to me to use this one. I have that machine....or close to it. There are some slight differences between years, but yes.....I can take a picture of mine. I also have the book, so I can look things up for you. I inherited mine from my Godmother when she passed.
It appears I have the Slantomatic 401a.

Do you have the rocketeer? I think you're on the right track with the yahoo groups. They have an enormous wealth of info.

Singer Slant-O-Matic 401A. Trying it right now! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk ---------- Post added at 05:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:38 PM ---------- Can't find the power cord. I think when we donated an antique sewing machine, we switched the cords. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk ---------- Post added at 06:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:55 PM ---------- Nevermind! It's the right cord and we sewed! Now I need a fabric budget. Re: Anyone knowledgeable about vintage (not antique) Singer sewing machines?
Oh my goodness. I just sewed about 8 Cub Scout patches on in about 2 minutes. Why did I wait so long to get this gorgeous machine out!
If you've ever hand-sewn a Cub Scout patch, you know what I mean. I think they're made from Kevlar. I think you could shingle a roof with them. No more sore fingers! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk |
