Re: Making vanilla
I use the big jug of vodka from Costco All alcohol is supposed to be gluten free because when it's distilled there is only alcohol if there is alcohol in a vanilla it's been added with the "vanilla flavor". I use the whole bean and I just keep using the same beans and add one or two new each time

Re: Making vanilla
I ordered clear bottles...in a 5 oz size. I had them shipped to my mom in the states to save shipping....but they have to arrive in TX in a week, so she can bring them to me when she comes for a visit!

Re: Making vanilla
I heard as little as 8 weeks. It definitely deepens over time though. Vanilla sugar is super yum too. I've been using it for my coffee.

Re: Making vanilla
Do the bottles have to be food grade or does that only apply to plastic?

There are varying qualities. Dried out ones will work but won't be as vanillay. Frontier is a good place reportedly to order them. Some countries are known for better vanilla than others, though I'm not sure which are in the elite I got mine from Costco and have been pleased with them, even though they aren't "special" ---------- Post added at 09:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:36 PM ---------- My vanilla is just in a mason jar.

Re: Making vanilla
I would think the only concern about *food grade* would be if it were plastic. Glass is glass, ya know?
I am getting vanilla beans from Blue Savannah. I have no idea what her source is! You could always her about it.

I buy them at vanilla products usa. Super oily, fragrant and plump beans plus very good prices.

Re: Making vanilla
Does anybody know if vanilla beans are on the "good" or "bad" lists afa buying organic goes? I generally buy everything organic. I haven't even researched the price difference yet. Off to do that!
