Re: And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down...
We were prepared for an extended stay home. We live in a high area away from the river. So it's bizarre to look at the road closures and know that there are a LOT of places we can't get to because the roads out. Dh can get to work - we think - but my mom would be hard pressed to get from her area to the city. I think I could get to my moms...I think.

Woke up to the sound of rain this morning, but it is supposed to begin to dry out today and be sunny the rest of the week.

Re: And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down...
seen pics on the news and can't believe the damage to roads and such. Prayers for safety for those in that area. Husband's aunt lives somewhere in SC near the flooding....family can't reach her. I am sure she is fine, but still worrisome.

If it helps, I am 30 or less minutes from some of the horrific destruction and haven't experienced any problems. I am concerned that it's still raining, though not as hard, and now there is a wind advisory - saturated ground and wind pushing trees sounds like a bad combo.

Re: And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down...
A couple of dams have been breached in Columbia and they are saying this might be worse than yesterday. Mandatory evacuations. Sigh.

How close are you to the mandatory evacuations?

Re: And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down...
Pretty far away. I could get there in about 30 minutes, but that's super far in comparison to the situation.
The canal along the river, in another area but near the evacuations, has ruptured and is causing water to be turned off in places in the city. Apparently they Corp of Engineers are planning to drop barges to slow the loss of water and then copter sand in from my area.

I've been thinking of you and praying that you and yours were safe, so I'm super relieved to hear you are.
The pics on the news look just awful though.

Now this is close. What isn't clear at all is that this pond had almost dried up as of about a week ago - lots of grass growing in the pond bed - and went from almost empty to breech over the weekend. If you follow the flow of water past the mill itself, once it goes past the building, there is a road (or was, not sure of the status - think it's fixed) and my oldest daughter works about a block down to the right at the main library. But the good news is that the country style restaurant that is in the mill plans to reopen soon so the true southerners don't have to cook their own grits for long.

Seems to be a strange and almost forgotten light source coming from the sky, which has ironically turned blue this morning. The beginning of the next phase.

Re: And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down...
This is kinda cool. The local faith based charity organization - Lexington Interfaith Community Services - posted this tonight (10:20 ish eastern time is the post) https://www.facebook.com/lexington.lics?fref=nf
Summary - 'we can't handle any more volunteers' 'we collected 64 tons of donations in one day' As soon as the curfew lifted, they were flooded (forgive the pun) with so much that they had to move things to a church gym a block away. If anyone has seen the footage in post 25, this organization is only one block up from that area, so how all of this got there is pretty amazing. We are located about a 30 minute drive with traffic from the serious flooding areas.

Awesome! Samaritan's Purse is on the ground in your area, too.
