Re: Any traditions?
The first day of school we go out to eat for supper.
The first Friday of school we go out for ice cream. Every Friday night we have haystacks--diy Frito salad. Every birthday, we tell our girls the story of the day they were born.

Re: Any traditions?
My oldest who loves traditions and quality time and little gifts has shaped me and our family for the better You may find that your child grows and gives you ideas!
Birthdays: They go to Party City and pick out a big, helium balloon. I hang a new tshirt on their bedroom doorknob that they can wear that day. They wear "It's my birthday" pins on their shirt Valentines Day: They decorate a box together (my oldest completely facilitates at this point) and we make cards for one another. We give each child a small gift or a group gift. Heart shaped pancakes for dinner with chocolate covered strawberries I know there are others, but these immediately come to mind. Any traditions?
Quote:
We have tons of Christmas traditions. My favorite is our advent calendar that I made when they were little. It's huge and has pieces to be put in the manger scene every day. I make the same breakfast every year and we only have it then (and now on ds's birthday because it's his favorite. So twice a year) We do birthday breakfast. Every year on ds's birthday we go to the Chinese restaurant where he was almost born. I used to get their pics taken in Chinese clothes every year but the older the boys got the less enthusiastic they were about it. When they turn 18 I have them make a footprint and I put their baby footprint next to it. I have statues of their hands from when they were babies. Most traditions happen organically I think. Re: Any traditions?
I thought of more. These are just aspects of dh's my interests that our kids have enjoyed.
My dh is the biggest Tolkien fan, ever. Seriously. He loathes the movies. He's read the trilogy at least 50 times and every book Tokien ever wrote at least once. He's been reading The Hobbit and LOTR aloud to our kids for years. They've all listened to each book at least twice. My eldest has read them all herself at least twice, too. Our kids also enjoy the authorized Star Wars novels by Timothy Zahn because of my dh. I'm an avid gardener and our kids have been included in my gardening, always. They get just as excited about the first tomato as I do. They cry a little with me when the deer eat my hydrangea. They know about neem oil for aphids, scale, and fungus. They also know not to trust a broody hen if she's not a silkie. We all love skiing, hiking, and camping, too. |

Love that you garden with them. Maybe when I quit teaching in five years to homeschool I can do that My DH also loves Star Wars. He said he is SO excited for the moment our daughter learns Darth Vader is Luke's father I love the idea of reading it to them too Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: Any traditions?
We read the Word together at lunchtime every day (outside, if the weather permits).
My kids take turns (from oldest to youngest) putting the star on top of the Christmas tree each year. I always make waffles for breakfast on the first day of school. On birthdays, the birthday kid gets to pick what we have for dinner (within reason; last year my youngest tried to convince me to let them eat skittles for dinner ) Next year on Easter (my dad's favorite holiday), we start the tradition of making apple pie (my dad's favorite pie) for dessert. When he's gone, it will be a tradition in his honor.

Re: Any traditions?
We do elaborate Easter egg picture hunt.
The çhildren help fill the Christmas stockings. I have a Erzgebirge that I pull out on the winter solstice. Once the çhildren are older I hope to have it out longer but right now one night is enough. We made pizza every Friday night but my girls don't like pizza so we don't do it every week now. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

Re: Any traditions?
I've become really bad at tradition because we r in survival mode so I'm working to re-establish. I can only think of one . Great thread!!!
We take pictures of our baby with the same stuffed animal every month till they are one to show growth/change!!

Re: Any traditions?
A couple of our spiritual traditions:
I give my son a nightly blessing and a morning blessing upon waking as well. It is short and simple (I do the sign of the cross over him and ask for Jesus Christ to be with him as he sleeps). He cannot sleep without me giving him his blessing. Every Christmas, I read the book The Tale of the Three Trees to him. Praying over our meals. There are a host of spiritual traditions that are part of our Orthodox faith as well that we treasure each year. ---------- Post added at 11:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 PM ---------- As for traditions that are not specifically religious in nature, these have changed over the years. I always tried to establish a rhythm in our home resembling inhalation and exhalation activities. Example, after we spend time cuddling and reading on the couch, we would get up and take a walk around the neighborhood to get our blood moving. The activities we participated in changed over the years, but the inhale/exhale process stayed the same. |
