spinoff - *vegetarian* refreid beans
I hate lard I had to eat those kind of beans when I lived with MIL and *never again* will I do that.
I buy vegetarian beans in the can, but I would like to make my own - anyone have a good recipe?

Re: spinoff - *vegetarian* refreid beans
okay, I don't really have a recipe for vegetarian refried beans, but I was just found out today that they have lard in them.I'm typing this as I'm eating a bean burrito. Where have I been? I'm just gonna soak some pintos, cook them, then stick them in a blender. I'll probably stirfry some onions and stick those in. Hope you find something.

I puree some onion, add a little oil and salt, cumin if I feel like it, cook till soft and add pureed beans and heat through.

that's pretty much what I do. . . onions & garlic sauteed, add beans (I puree 2/3 and leave 1/3 whole), salt, cumin and maybe coriander. Once you make your own, you'll never buy canned again. I made big batches and freeze them in Ziplock bags.

YES! In fact I made them last night again. I take the beans (usually I buy the dry beans and cook them in a crock pot until soft, but you can use canned as well...and I sometimes use black beans, sometimes kidney beans...it just depends what I've got on hand.) Then I saute a little fresh garlic on the stovetop (with olive oil, or nothing if you prefer) and then add the beans (which I have already mashed with a hand masher or a fork). I then add cumin, chili powder and oregano and cook until warm.
