First Grade!
Lucca is almost 6, and I think she will be starting first grade in the fall. I am trying to gather resources now, I'm kind of overwhelmed. First: We did school this past year very laid-back. Very. She is starting to learn how to read (of her own accord), which makes me think we could start really schooling in the fall. I still lean away from from very formal schooling, but I personally need to have a Plan to follow, doing my own thing has been fine so far, but I tend to get lost and lose steam. So where do I start? What topics do you cover in first grade? How do you choose a curriculum? I figured I would mix and match and I like being flexible. Side note, how do you plan your semester/year?

Re: First Grade!
My first and second were different. My first I started slowly, gathering resources as I found them. Then my second tagged along on those resources, so my second had a lot more "structured" grade 1 than my first did, you know?
I started with finding math. Then handwriting. Then we added Writing With Ease, I think. Then science/art? (Forget the order there.) Then history. Then grammar? Something like that progression. Basically, it was as I found a cool resource and thought, "OOooooh, we should do that!" I would personally make sure I nailed down math and handwriting and reading (mine were both reading fluently before K, so we didn't teach reading.) The rest is sort of gravy. For the disclaimer, we at this point lean pretty classical. If you want suggestions on resources to use (that are mostly pretty classical) then I can share what we're using for Grade 1. Oh, other disclaimer. Because of how homeschooling is structured in my area, we get some funding to use so I don't worry much about how much a curriculum costs. |

Re: First Grade!
You can check out www.allinonehomeschool.com and see if there is anything there you can use. Both genders of my homeschoolers liked a Success with schlastic workbook that did simple map activities

Re: First Grade!
We do My Fathers World family cycle, Christian Light Math and Language Arts. I like to have cool hands on stuff, lots of books, cool videos....I don't push anything too major too early but that said I am doing the IOWA testing for me in a couple weeks. I just want to see their strengths and weaknesses and what they need to go over
