Dying yarn...

Can you dye acrylic? I have some light pink that won't do for the place I'm knitting for (needs to be darker). Can I dye it darker?

i think you could try RIT.

I watched a video yesterday that said RIT worked on wool, but not acrylic. The video showed dying it with acrylic paint. Now of course I'm having kinda icky feelings about putting paint on plastic and then using it to make something for a baby.

Can't afford natural all the time though. I'm thinking about trying it on Saturday because it's supposed to be nice out.

Nordicmart carries Drops yarn from Europe. It's priced well if you are ever looking for a good price. I'm going to try the cotton merino for mg next baby project.

I don't think you want to use RIT on any baby items. It never fixes to the fiber & can get sucked off. Have you looked at dharma dyes website? It's pretty informative

I'll take a look. That or I'm just going to have to have a word with that 'great-grandmother voice' I always hear that says 'use what you have or do without' and explain 'sometimes you just have to toss yarn grandma. Not like we had to spin it ourselves or anything'.

You could even argue that acrylic isn't yarn.

What is your project? I was always pretty happy with the fisherman's wool. It was pretty inexpensive and decently soft. You can dye it with food coloring and vinegar.

It all depends on what the yarn tells me it wants to be. I am knitting for a group that sends items to the maturity ward on a Reservation so that the babies will all have something to go home in and stay warm. So hats, sweaters (still need to learn that one), mitts, booties, and baby snug sacks are all potentials - depending on the weight of the yarn and how much I have.

What what I have that I'm considering dying (or not

) it could make a hat, booties and some mits perhaps.

Food coloring

I've actually wondered about using blueberry juice or even tea to give some color. In addition to the acrylic, I am going to have some white cotton left over from making something for a co-worker of dd's that will need something done with it before it can go to the ob ward.

Food dye really only works on animal fiber. Dylon, Tulip or something like that would work on cotton.
