transitioning to a separate sleeping surface

We just got bunk beds for the boys, they're assembled but we don't have mattresses yet so we're not actually using them yet. G will have the top bunk, Z the bottom, which is pushed up next to the queen bed I sleep on. Z's used to sleeping right next to me, preferably with his leg on top of mine (I think bulky cloth diapers are the cause for this habit). I'd like to nurse him to sleep on the bottom bunk and then move back on to my mattress. I'd like to be middle of the night weaned when new baby is here, but don't think I'll mind nursing once to sleep if he needs it. As we start this transition should I - nurse to sleep in the bunk bed and stay there and get him used to the space and then start working my way back later, like a few weeks - or nurse to sleep and move back to my mattress immediately. If I move back to my mattress, do I go to him when he wakes or let him come to me? How has this played out in others situations?

I would play it by ear and try different things before the baby comes.Is it same level as your bed? If not could it be adjusted to be? Tryng to scooch up or down like that sounds hard for a PP body!

We don't have the mattresses yet, but I suspect it's going to be a few inches lower, which we might be able to fix with padding under the foam but it will be a trial process. I pretty much want him to be good on his own, maybe some stirring that I can talk him through or put a hand on his back, when the baby comes in Feb, so I've got 6ish months. I'm not sure if DH will be able to help or not. But hopefully not nursing back to sleep or having to move enough to disturb the newborn who will be in my bed. Going between bed surfaces when 9 months pregnant or postpartum would not be fun!

You are wise to start now and that same height is really important.Just having that diff surface can make such a big diff
