All about reading?
Has anyone here used All About Reading to teach their child to read? If so, what do you think of the program? If you didn't use AAR what did you use?

Re: All about reading?
We chose Logic of English instead, but I'm really not sure it was the right choice. AAR may have been the better option.

Re: All about reading?
My 8 yo dd is finishing up level 3. After trying multiple programs, AAR finally got her reading. It is teacher intensive and time intensive, but it gives very thorough phonics instruction.

Re: All about reading?
We love AAR! Our 7 yo ds finished up the last level and the girls have been going through the pre-level. I am really happy with it and think it has been one of the best homeschooling purchases so far. Our son really took off with his reading and it is fun to see.

Re: All about reading?
I didn't. We used lots of reading to them, and then they played with Starfall and we did Progressive phonics.
I seem to have early readers, though, so we never needed an intensive "teach a child to read" program. We are now using All About Spelling, though, and like it. I hear that some people use it to teach reading as well? Not sure how... |

Re: All about reading?
I don't care for level one. May order other levels though. The readers are nicer than BOB books.
I like 100 Easy lessons followed by sequel, Funnix (come with computer program, but we just use book). I also like Ordinary Parents Guide.

Re: All about reading?
We're a few lessons into Level 1 and I like the way everything fits together so nicely. It all complements each other and I can see how that will lead to increased confidence. It's tweakable as well. Every lesson tells you to read out loud to your child for twenty minutes. We do that after her brothers are in bed. Magnetic letters can be rearranged, activity sheets can be modified.
The review box is worth the ten bucks even though it's optional. It has nifty dividers for "words to review","words mastered" and so on. I need that sort of thing! I can see at a glance what sounds and words A has mastered. |

Re: All about reading?
We had amazing success with AAR. I pulled my son from the public school because of dyslexia and after about a month on this program he was already starting to completely read on his own. We are about to finish the final level and I can't say enough good things about it!!! I do believe though it uses a form of the orton-gillingham method so its great for struggling readers/possible dyslexia.

What grade level do the levels correspond to? My DD reads on a solid 2nd grade level in 2nd grade. I'm not sure which AAR level to buy. She's past the first two, but I'm not sure beyond that!

Re: All about reading?
We like All About Spelling, which is the same company.
When it comes to reading we start with Bob books. Now from the beginning when they ask about letters I teach them the sound the letter makes instead of the name of the letter. Starting around four, every few months we'd try the first Bob book. When it finally clicks and they start sounding out words (it seems to be a lightbulb that just turns on at some point and suddenly they can sound out words), we do the Bob books. I've never used a formal reading program. But none of them have dyslexia or anything. We just wait until they are ready and they take off reading! We go through the first set of Bob books and maybe do a little in the second and then they are ready for other easy reader books. My dd2 (5) is learning to read right now and she asks all kinds of questions about what words spell. She can do most vowel-consonant-e words now. I'll point them out in books we're reading together and ask her to read them. So I will read most of the words on a page but when we get to bed, pen, cat, big, or cup I will ask her what it says. I've never really seen the need for anything more formal than that with my kids.

Re: All about reading?
I have one struggling reader & one self-taught reader.
AAR is my 3rd attempt (the first success!) for my struggling reader. What didn't work for us is 100 Easy Lessons, doing it myself with Bob Books, and The Writing Road to Reading. In fairness, the last one we didn't get too far because the book was just. too. overwhelming. to me. I could not comprehend reading this massive manual on how to teach reading. AAR is based on the Orton-Gillingham method, which is highly regarded for dyslexia & other struggles, yet the parent/teacher doesn't have to become an expert on this method. I just follow the lessons laid out for me by someone who *does* understand the method. In summary if you have a self-taught reader, you may find AAR unnecessary, but if you have a struggling reader, I highly recommend it.

Re: All about reading?
I'm not sure on grade level either...we pulled my son the middle of second and started with level 2 but he was way behind. We are about to finish level 4 in 3rd. Just take the placement test and see but I'd think at least 3 or 4.
