Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I was going to say check for posterior tongue tie. it isn't the same as a traditionally recognized tongue tie. it has been tied to TMJ and neck and migrain issues in adults. Cranial sacral can help with it but getting the tie revised before seems to be the most effective.
One of the many https://nursingrubysue.wordpress.com...-a-tongue-tie/ http://www.tonguetie.net/index.php?o...task=view&id=3

We've tried a lot of things for her tmj and for her migraines. We live w the hope that something will help right now, we r managing w meds, acupuncture and PT but PT benefits are ending and meds continue to cause reflux. Acupuncture is helping a ton but in between treatments she's still miserable Here's the list of unsuccessful *chiropractic - manual and w activator *homeopathics *tmj specialist and night splint *meds/tons - narcotics, antidepressants, migraine drugs, NSAIDs, muscle relaxers and opiates Helpful but not curing *acupuncture *PT and home exercises/stretching *postural education *moist heat *herbs (some work and some don't)- we use an herbal anti inflammatory and connective support *arnica, tiger balm and magnesium spray to back/neck and jaw We r tired but she's at least made *some* progress the past few weeks. Hoping she continues to improve and it gets less bumpy. I'm currently reading TMJ No More.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
Havent read other posts. Chiro care has almost eliminated my tmj. It was so awful in my teens and we never knew what to do. It never bothers me now unless my neck is out of alignment.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I have Tmj. A night splint on my front teeth did help (I clench) but I think my sleep apnea is what aggravates it the most (causes the clenching)

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I wear a splint all the time, except when I'm eating. As long as I wear it, I don't have issues. I've been wearing splints for twenty years now.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I've never heard of this but it seems opposite. She's tight as a drum. Probably fight or flight from the severe traumas she's suffered at an early age.
Today was a good day. I didn't mention but one of the reasons that I bumped this was we took her to the regular dentist for an outside opinion because she went from tolerable to not functioning w her splint. The dentist wants us to start over with HIS home care advice for 4-6 weeks before getting a second tmj specialist opinion. Interestingly, adding the one thing no one told us (which is also in the book "tmj no more"), MOIST heat, seems to be really helping she's using warm wet washcloths and a rice sock on her neck, temples and jaw. However, if that's all that's needed because we've spent a lot of time and money trying to unravel this issue

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
I've been dealing with this, too. Moist heat (two homemade rice packs) on both jaw joints before bed seems to help some. I've also been doing stretches from Katy Says. With no $ for physical therapy or massage this has been the best way I've been able to help myself so far.

Re: TMJ - treatment options?
Just an update-- my dd is SO SO SO much better. She still has bad days/nights but in general she's coping and managing and it appears that the nighttime issues are more related to her sleep disorder which may or may not be related to the TMJ (the body is such an interconnected thing ). Our acupuncturist is going to begin focusing more on her sleep issues now that her neck and jaw are SO SO SO improved.
She has successfully been discharged from PT and continues to do the following as maintenance *weekly acupuncture although as I said above more focused on sleep now *daily stretches *daily natural muscle relaxer 2 x's a day (good mood tonic) *as needed arnica pills as well as ointment on her neck and back *as needed moist heat *oral magnesium *daily exercise - walking or riding her bike - I worry the bike riding is hunching but getting her blood pumping REALLY REALLY seems to be a great thing for her. PT worked but our dentist was right. She wasn't bad enough to need a night splint so that was a waste of time and money. I'm just grateful she's significantly better updating for those looking for help with this problems and for myself for reminders if we get off track again
