Christian Bookstore experience ....
So, DH and I just moved to a new town. I have been searching for a church and found one I am really interested in. Their format is contemporary and they are avid studiers of the Bible. So, I wanted to make sure I took my Bible. However, with the move, I cannot find it Thus, my trip to the local Christian Bookstore!
I found a nice Bible and decided to browse their parenting section for parents' devotionals and etc. What I found was less than appetizing! I found numerous books from Dobson and Tripp! I also found what I thought was a good book for a mother in the first year of parenting-- but, when I opened it, it read how to train your baby with CIO starting in the 3rd month! The only book I found praise worthy was Chapman's books on the 5 love languages. I went to the counter and asked did they not have any gentle discipline books and she looked at me like I had a horn growing from my head! She then offered to see if it was a book they could get.... but, CRYSTAL-- I misremembered the title of your book and she couldn't find it! *sigh* Maybe I will give them a call back later today to see if she can order it for the store! Cindy

Re: Christian Bookstore experience ....
*sigh* Our local bookstore carries Tripp and Dobson, BUT they also carry some positive stuff, though I can't recall the titles... at the very least, you should suggest the Clarksons, Ted Kimmel's book, and Crystal's book!

Re: Christian Bookstore experience ....
How frustrating.
My book is being reviewed in a review magazine that goes to Christian stores so maybe they'll be more inclined to get it

Re: Christian Bookstore experience ....
I have yet to go to a CB that has anything but punitive parenting literature/resourses.

Re: Christian Bookstore experience ....
I've had better luck at the homeschooling store near us.
And, IMHO, good luck getting anyone in the Bible Belt NOT to carry Dobson. I'm sorry, but the man is like a cult. "Well, Dobson says to carry a tomato in your left shoe, so I'm going to the store to buy tomatoes. WHAT?! You're not coming? Don't you LIKE Dobson?!" |

Re: Christian Bookstore experience ....
I agree-- Dobson seems to be EVERYWHRE!
On a positive note, I just found a church that I am loving more and more each time I visit--AND, they are leading Grace-based Parenting classes! I really need to go back to the bookstore tomorrow and try to order Crystal's book there as well as convince them to keep it in stock! Cindy

Re: Christian Bookstore experience ....
I haven't really sought Christian book stores for parenting methods books... those are things I tend to research and buy online these days when I feel like I need a book's guidance. I don't have a huge issue with Dobson... I don't agree with a lot of his parenting suggestions (so I just don't read that info really) but I agree with some of his advice for older teens and marriage.
