Default Garden

We found a place to live and it sits on 1/4 of an acre so I'd like to start a vegetable garden. I have no idea how to start, when/what to plant. Does anyone have useful links?

I thought there used to be a forum here, but I'm having trouble finding it. I'll have to dig through my Pinterest, but I think I have a list of when to plant things in there.

The only advice I will give is start small! It is very easy to get excited and plant way more garden that you have time and energy for.
Like I have done...

you might want to look at the facebook page anyway - there are members on it who are from other states even although it is mostly local. The people on it are really helpful and it is my favorite part of facebook.
You can also check out library books on the topic and see if there are some forums or facebook groups that are local to your area.
We started our veggie garden last year.
Dh built a raised bed and it was quite experimental, but fun and we did get edible produce from it.

Many years ago I grew squash and it was fabulous and made more than I could ever imagine eating. I gave tons away to neighbors. This summer squash bugs destroyed most of my squash and eventually got to my cucumbers as well. From what I saw on the facebook group, that was common in my area. My cousin, who lives in the Houston area, however, had no problem with squash bugs.
Last year, I grew two large, fruitless tomato trees.
This year, I had one monster cherry tomato plant that made tons of tomatoes. My advice on tomatoes is to put them in the ground early and cover well if there are late freezes. They tend to produce well when it is cooler weather, but the tomatoes ripen more as it heats up. The end of July and August are too hot here for them. Then, they perked up and started making tons of tomatoes again in the fall, but we had an early freeze and I had to harvest tons of green tomatoes. I just finished them off. They were good.
Kale and chard grows well in cooler weather - early spring into the beginning of summer and again late fall and winter.
Black eyed peas - I just planted the ones from my pantry - love the TX summer heat! And they are really fabulous fresh! I totally recommend them.

Last year was my first year for a garden. I started out small. Mainly tomatoes, cucumbers and cilantro. Not fancy. This year pretty much the same except I added carrots, and green onions.
