I'm not sure if it's in the original, but could you check pages 125-130? I'm looking for an article quoted in those pages. I want the quote about hitting a toddler who hits or the toddler's "hitting will persist or even escalate".

Also, I don't know if the story of disciplining his dog is in that book? Do you remember by any chance?

I have the new DtD and will flip through it. We may have the strong willed child but I'm pretty sure it's the old one. I'm not entirely sure where it is.

Found something on pg 80 where he drags the dog to get a ball, then rewards it with a cookie. Is that the story?

I'm 99% sure the thing with him beating the dog about staying in the dog bed and comparing it (without really spelling it out) to how you have to beat down a child to show who is boss is in Strong Willed Child, since that's the only one I've read thoroughly.
I think that's the one with the intentionally extremely painful shoulder pinch advice too.

My parents were Dobson fans. Got the mag and everything. I used to support spanking, but that was long before I had kids. I've never read anything by Dobson, and I'm thankful for that. But the excerpts you all are mentioning are awful. I just can't believe so many read this and don't see a problem with it. I would have been among them at one point in time.

So that's where my mom got that.

I still have issues with people touching my neck or shoulder near my neck because of that.

Me too.
My mom used to do the shoulder pinch thing. And then we kids (me, my brother, and my sister) started doing it to each other

I still have issues with people touching my shoulders. DH has to be really careful when he's rubbing my shoulders/back
