So I haven't read the whole thread but I'm amazed at the difference that the brand makes. I was taking some sort of capsule. And it didn't help much. Then I switched to Kal liquid and WOW! So much better. Sleep is better, no restless ankles. Its great!

I hear Liquimins is even better and I'm going to save up since its so much more expensive!

I cut back my cal/mag last night after reading this thread, and I didn't wake up with a drunken stupor hangover! I have been feeling like I am moving through water until at least noon or later for many moons. I cut back from 1000 mg Ca/750 mg Mg to 750 mg Ca / 375 Mg. The drawback was that I did nto sleep as well. I also didn't have hot flashes all night. Can Mg cause those, I wonder..?

Right so I'm confused. I take 1200mg cal to 600 mg magnesium a day to help me sleep and help restless legs. I just googled the Natural Calm stuff as I was wondering whether it's also available in the UK. It is! But this is what the blurb says:

Quote:
Formulated with 3 parts magnesium to 2 parts calcium, which will prevent a surplus of calcium robbing the body's magnesium supply and avoid the symptoms associated with depleted levels of magnesium.
So do I take too much calcium??

housecat - no you are not taking too much.

Has anyone given this to their preteen/teen dd??? I have said I was going to get it based on a recommendation from Allison a long, long time ago, but couldn't find it in liquid or powder form. But after these past few days of hormonal ups and downs, I am going to the Vitamin store to get some. Just curious since I didn't read anywhere of this being good for our dd's too. Thanks!

I HIGHLY recommend Effervescent CalMag citrate powder from Thorne Research Labs. It is highly digestable and is quickly assimilatable. Not only do you have all the wonderful benefits of the calcium and magnesium mentioned by everyone here, but it completely elliminated ALL my indigestion during pregnancy. It is GREAT stuff!!

Also, and interesting point to note regarding Calcium/Mag - we are the most calcium absorbent in 2 major times of our lives - before and up to adolescence (so I give my children regular calcium, especially my girls as they are leading up to menstruating) and when we are pregnant/breastfeeding. It is very good to take cal/mag even when we are not super absorbable to it, but I HIGHLY recommend that all pregnant and nursing moms take it so they can refill the stores they are giving away so freely to baby. You'll be thankful for it later in life!

Default Re: The official Cal Mag thread

Question: What is the recommended daily amount for preschool-aged children?

*************************

Nutshell version of this thread:

Mag oxide is bad (very poorly absorbed).

Mag citrate is good

Calcium Carbonate is bad (kidney stones are made of it, and may cause constipation)

Calcium citrate good.

Recommended dose is around 1200/400 or 1200/600

3:1 ratio is minimum (3 cal/1 mag)
2:1 and even 1:1 have all been studied, and shown to be at least as good as 3:1 if not better for some conditions (1:1 is best for those coping w/ hypertension, but can give digestive problems from so much magnesium)

Liquimins - 32 oz, $21 on amazon. 2 Tbsp dosage. 1200/600 ratio.
http://www.amazon.com/Liqumins-Liqui...=1TIRZ5VK9WR2U

Bluebonnet - 16 oz, $10.50 on amazon ($4 shipping, cheapest available). 1200/600 ratio. 2 Tbsp dosage.
http://www.amazon.com/Liquid-Calcium...=1TIRZ5VK9WR2U
Label info http://www.bluebonnetnutrition.com/p...lus_Vitamin_D3

Thorne Effervescent - 8oz - Avoid this product, IMO. Made of cal carbonate and has 1:1 ratio of cal/mag.

cal mag should be taken at NIGHT. It acts as a sedative and relaxes muscles. Perfect for the end of the day, not so great in the morning.

Don't take together with iron, which inhibits absorption of calcium

Sally Fallon recommends dolomite, but I didn't see any liquid cal/mag products specifying dolomite as a source.

The other products on this thread that I researched online failed to meet the above criteria. Country Life, KAL, and one other I think.

Why is liquid better than tablets? I can get dolomite tablets.

Also - is Floradix liquid cal/mag good? I've found a uk online source for that.

Oh, and how about calcium phosphate as the calcium source? Though I think the kids chewable cal/mag I found with calcium phosphate had mag oxide for the mag

Default Re: The official Cal Mag thread

Just ran across this post from Allisonintx in 2007
Quote:
THE CALCIUM COMPENDIUM

Here is a compendium of Cal/Mag threads I've typed in the last year or so....I'm happy to answer any questions that might springboard from it....

Benefits include: Good bone health (this includes teeth,) lowered risk of cardio-vascular disease (heart attack is the number one killer of women in America) Sound sleep (even when you aren't getting much, the quality of sleep is better, and you fall asleep faster) decreased or eliminated swelling/water weight gain associated with pregnancy or PMS, decreased or eliminated leg cramps at night. Those are just off the top of my head.

Vegetarians need less cal/mag supplementation (as long as they are not "Potato Chip Vegetarians") because a diet lower in protien allows for easier absorption of calcium, but for a meat eater in her childbearing years, 1200mgCalcium and 400mg of magnesium is a healthy target.

---------------------------------------------

Anyway, take your Calcium and Magnesium, because they will help your blood pressure stay low even when you're stressed and because the benefits are legion including:
the little sleep you get will be more restful sleep
it will keep you from retaining water
it will keep you from having bone loss
it helps with weight loss
it will help keep your teeth healthy
it will help your emotions be on a more even keel.

1500mg of Calcium and 500mg of Magnesium EVERY SINGLE NIGHT before bed, no excuses.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

know I sound like a broken record when I say this, but Cal/Mag can help, especially with a girl in her tween/teens who is putting on the bone density that will get her through her childbearing years. 1200mgCalcium/400mgMagnesium is what they need. It will help her sleep, keep her from retaining water, help her muscles fully relax through the night so she doesn't wake up irritable from a bad night's sleep where she never fully slept. Drinking milk won't cut it, the Calcium is too poorly absorbed to be terribly useful.

---------------------------------------------------------

Restless Leg Syndrome can be helped by taking a good hefty dose of Calcium and Magnesium at bedtime. Sometimes it is caused by buildup of acid in the muscles of the legs over the day and the body's inabilty to neutralize them. Calcium will bind the acid and the magnesium is a smooth muscle relaxer. It can take as much as 3000mg calcium and 1000mg magnesium to make a difference. This is safe to take in pregnancy.

------------------------------

I recently learned that for treating RLS, the recommendation is EQUAL PARTS Calcium/Magnesium learn something new every day!!!

Even the *chronically underinformed* AMA recommends 1200mgCal400mgMag daily for women from menarche to menopause.

Here are the RDA's broken down by age

http://www.acu-cell.com/acn2.html

I recommend any calcium supplement that won't choke a horse, and doesn't require dozens of pills daily. Calcium Citrate is better IMO than Calcium Carbonate, but they will all work in the proper ratios.

There are different kinds of calcium. I never recommend Calcium Carbonate (most kidney stones are made out of this) Calcium Citrate doesn't make stones for most people like the Carbonate does.
