WE have been without one for years. we now have one, but i keep my baking stuff in it, (i do use the timer function on the mic tho and have accidentally nuked my sugar and stuff for a second before jamming the stop button repeatedly)

For reheating i mainly use the stove top. I LOVE my cast iron pans for reheating. I have several sizes that i have gotten over the years as gifts or at rummages.

to thaw food i can usually just let it soak in the packaging in a bowl of warmish water (just keep changing the water throughout the afternoon--it won't thaw out a big roast in an hour but a few chicken breasts or fish)

I have a convection toaster oven so I can bake small-ish things in it too So it takes maybe 5 minutes to heat a plate of food at 350. If I used the big oven I'd have to heat the whole thing up, wait for the preheating, and then it'd take longer because there's no fan in my big oven.

When we just had a regular toaster oven (it died and we were toaster-oven-less for about a year which was very sad ) we didn't use it for much other than making toast and cheese toast and quesadillas. The stovetop is the fastest way to reheat just about everything unless it's something like quiche... in which case the oven or toaster oven would be the best/fastest.

---------- Post added at 04:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:00 PM ----------

Oh, and I always use a timer when reheating in the oven/toaster oven. Otherwise I'd probably burn everything

I either use my toaster oven or a small skillet pan and I just heat everything up. It took me starting GAPS to do away with using it (although I did use it to make my lotion today )-I'd tried before and failed. But once I really got use to it, cooking in the microwave just seems wrong

The only reason we have a microwave is when ours broke friends gave us their old one because they wanted one that matched their kitchen. It is really just a child safe popcorn maker do us. I may heat up a cup of coffee rarely

I was microwave free for a couple years. Mine broke and we never replaced it. Then my parents replaced it for us. I didn't miss it when we didn't have it. It's really not that hard to not have a microwave. You just get used to not having one, so it's no big deal.

A well timed thread! I am microwave-free as of this past week. I have been wanting to do it for months, but I always take leftover food from supper and reheat at work in the microwave for my lunches. I am making an effort to pack and enjoy food that doesn't need heating (I realllly like a warm plate of something half way through my day, hehe), but the best solution has been buying a couple food thermoses, heating my food on the stove top in the morning, putting it right in the thermos, and it's still warm by lunch time. I love it! So far so good, and the food at home being reheated on the stove is much more thoroughly cooked and does taste better. Microwaved food has never been satisfactory, really.

We don't have a microwave (or a toaster oven, for that matter).

We reheat on the stove top and defrost in hot water (if something needs quick defrosting, but I don't make all that much that is frozen first). Honestly, we eat a lot of leftovers cold. And I try not to use the oven to reheat too much because inevitably I get involved in something else and whatever is in there burns.

We boil water and pop popcorn in a pot (I do wish I had a tea kettle, though). Dh reheats his coffee in a pot, too - and often scalds it.

Our microwave broke about 5 months ago and I don't intend on getting another one. It was basically a dust collector as it was very rarely used. I am looking forward to DH taking it to the dump next week so I can have more bench space

It just means I need to be organised the night before to get meat out to defrost int he fridge overnight....not a big problem really

The only thing we really missed at first was that DS was old enough to reheat his own leftovers with the micro but needed renewed supervision as he learned to use the stove. Now he's a pro.

I found a really nice and inexpensive tea kettle at Ross for dh's birthday last year The one we'd found at Goodwill a couple years previously (for like $1) finally got rusty so we got a new one!!! We drink tea at least once, if not twice, every single day (yes, even during the hot and humid summers ) so it's pretty much an essential item in our kitchen.

Yeah, we love tea here. Maybe I'll ask dh for one for Christmas.

Tea is awesome

My dh makes the BEST popcorn on the stovetop. No microwave variety can even come close Although if anything ever happened to him I'd have to learn how to make it Maybe I should ask for lessons next time he makes it just in case

My parents are like that, too. Years ago we went without one for awhile and I was glad, but then my parents bought us one. Then ours broke about a year ago, and my desire to not have one had grown strong and Mom knows I really don't want one, and we still don't have one, and it's going really well. My husband even said the other day that he was glad we don't have one!

Yayh!! I'm glad he was accepting of it! That will be great to get a popcorn popper and teakettle. I'm sorry, though, that the giraffe teakettle is out of stock.

I don't know how, but somehow I lost my teakettle. Maybe it got lost when we moved?? It's a puzzle to me. My favorite type is one that whistles to let me know it's ready! Anyway, sometimes to heat our water we use a Hot Shot hot water dispenser, and it's really fast. The kids like to use it. I have been using the same one for about 23 years, and my mom used it before that (she gave it to me when I went to college... her dad had given it to her as a gift years before that). LOL Lately most often, though, I've been using a little coffee pot to heat water... I just pour the water through, and instead of making coffee, I have nice hot water for my tea!

Kind of already there. My microwave is a very effective timer. Honestly I don't cook in my microwave. We keep it only because hubby refuses to give it up. He likes to warm up leftovers in it and the kids make instant oatmeal, but that's the extent of it. Oh wait, hubby also likes that nasty microwave popcorn. I much prefer stove top.
