Re: kombucha 101 thread!
With metal I'm pretty sure its only the scoby that has the touch o death for. Plastic the kind I buy has plastic lids. I'm sure quick contact is fine, though I've read where some people brew in plastic.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I use a large mouthed jar and plastic ladle. I use plastic funnels for loading into other glass jars so I can use my 2 Liter jar again.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I use plastic funnel and ladle as well. I think the issue is long term contact because the acidity of the KT will leach the chemicals out. But brief contact?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
hmmm On Sunday I got chia kombucha. It was really good.
Has anyone made this? would you add the seeds at the beginning or end of 2nd ferment. Oh and...would it hurt anything to use bucha before it was 'ready'?

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Chia!! Wow
I never would have thought of that. It won't hurt to use kt before it is ready. I have a question. What sugar ratio do yall use? I think I'm using waay too much. |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I would add the chia to the 2nd ferment. I bought some to try but haven't done it yet.
I make a gallon at a time and use just over 2/3 cup of sugar. |

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
i can't believe you all use ladles i have a gallon jar (like a pickle) and just pour it into smaller containers with a funnel
my second ferment bottles are old glass quart juice bottles or old glass kt kombucha bottles. they still get good and fizzy. i use 1cup of sugar for almost 4qts water and 4 tea bags (i use trader joe tea bags which have way more tea in them then the lipton)

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
That is because we are type threes. I don't use a funnel, even.
---------- Post added at 02:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:33 PM ---------- Oh. Also. Thanks for the sugar amounts. I was using four times too much. |

Mine is a 2 gallon glass cookie jar that is really wide. If I didn't use a ladle, it would spill everywhere trying to pour it It's way too heavy if I'm making 2 gallons of tea at a time too! I can barely carry it from my shelf to the kitchen.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
If I didn't use a ladle and a funnel I would get maybe 1 bottle of KT per gallon I brewed. I'm not good at accuracy when dealing with big jars and I'm exceptionally good at messy.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
Yeah, I use LisaM's recipe too. 1 cup of sugar, 2 TBs Lipton loose tea.
And I use no funnels or ladles, I just pour and go.

Re: kombucha 101 thread!
I use around a cup of sugar (I can eyeball it at this point ) and I'm using a 2 liter pickle jar type set up, or a skinny 2 liter jar from ikea.
5 or 6 teabags, lately only black tea, but I've done as many as 2 bags of green tea before. I let it steep for... a day usually? Then I add the sugar and extra water and stir like mad, wait a bit, ladle out some of the stuff from my scoby hotel, plop a scoby in, clean the jar and move on. When I transfer it out though, I can usually just pour the jar over into other jars as long as there's a big funnel.. otherwise, I spill really badly. IF I am having a really bad day, I have to ask DH to do it, otherwise I'll drop and break and spill. |
