Default Old family photos, do you think this is the same person?

I've been interested in figuring out my genealogy lately and I was given an enormous amount of old photographs that my great grandmother had. Some have names, but there is a stack of about 170 pictures, including about 40 old tin type pictures that don't have names. It makes me sad and kind of drives me crazy when I start trying to figure it out.
I think I have one person figured out though.
Do you think this is the same person? The top photo has a name on the back and is my great grandmother's grandmother. She was born in 1829 if anyone knows anything about dating old photos and can confirm that the 2nd one would be from the right time period. There is both a tin type and a paper copy of the 2nd one.

I'm so excited to have figured one of them out.
Also, what is the deal with half of the women being named Mary, it makes it so difficult! Her name is Mary, and I have a maiden name but it's not getting me anywhere.
I'm thinking of doing a 6 month membership to Ancestry .com but it seems so expensive.

depending on your state & the time period you are looking at, you may be able to get some state documents from ancestry free. I know I can for Pennsylvania - I got a ton of death certificates which helped with some brick walls. I know there's at least 1 other state where some state records are free but can't remember.

Family Search.org is a valuable resource for census records for free & some later marriage information. It's free but there are some pay resources but I've not needed any of that yet.

Wikitree.com is also free & may have some documentation. Just keep in mind that this one is all user updated. They DO require documentation but sometimes it doesn't get done right away or at all.

1790 is the earliest census but doesn't have a lot of info. My comp. froze when I was trying to find first census where they listed everyone by name. Some of the earlier ones only list head of household & number of males, females, etc.

Besides my boys, genealogy is my favorite thing

EDIT: 1850 was the first year to list all household members by name & the first slave schedules but sadly not by name.

The familysearch site is amazing. I don't know if it's all correct, but it's got one line all the way back to the 1400s, through one of the first American Colonists, Richard Treat who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637.
Nothing on Mary in the picture though.

yea, the trees are all user submitted & not always accurate. The further back you go, the harder it is to get records. But it's such an awesome hobby.

The public library near my parent's house has free ancestry.com access for members. Check your library's website to see if there is a similar deal.

Also consider a historical society. I married into a Mennonite family, and we have access to databases at the Mennonite Historical Society. There are weekly volunteers and paid staff to help research, too.

I say same woman. Also.... the young woman in the bottom left corner looks shockingly like a friend of mine.

Interesting. Some of them look so familiar to me, but maybe it's just because I've seen the pictures so many different times. I wish someone had written something on this one other than family reunion.

How about these:
[IMG][/IMG]

Don't know who, but they all look like they could be the same person, especially the first two.

[IMG][/IMG]
My great grandfather in the middle. He did have several brothers though. I took the baby picture out of a little frame that was falling apart and discovered a hidden mother.

My Great-great grandmother in the middle, also named Mary of course.

Very fascinating. I don't think the top woman is the same in all three pictures. So many differences I wouldn't attribute to age.
