internet connection speed

I think I've found a plan we're going to go with (AT&T U Verse) for internet and cable. But I'm wondering if the internet speed we've picked is okay. It's 6 Mbps, which I think is slower than what we have right now. We just use the internet for browsing online, and my dh sometimes watches movies online. No gaming, no major downloading, etc. The person I talked to on the phone said it's fast, and it's their second lowest speed, so I was glad she didn't try to talk me into something else. It's fiber optic, if that makes a difference. Thanks!

You can check your current speed at Speedtest.net. I know I can really tell when my speed is below 2-3. Ours is usually 20-25 Mbps down and 3-4 up.

We have AT&T U-Verse 12 mbps because the person on the phone said that would be good for streaming and working online. It's sufficient most of the time, but not all the time. If you're just browsing online, 6 will be ok for you. If you do any streaming, it's too slow. I find their connection to be more consistent than others, but the cable doesn't make a difference AFA speed. We are going to upgrade because at 12, we have trouble connecting to PSN and Netflix at the same time, loading Netflix or Amazon Streaming takes up to a couple minutes sometimes, and it can't handle too much usage at the same time.

I personally wouldn't go less than 15-20 if you stream music and movies or do lots of downloading.. If more than one person wants to stream you'll start running into bandwidth issues and your streaming speed may suffer. I know they are calling it fiber optic, but the service is only as advanced as the company providing it... you'll definitely want to use internet speed test sites to make sure you're getting what they promise. We have comcast and our internet speeds are up to 1gbps but hubby is a serious gamer and we definitly pay for it, but being able to run all of our devices on wireless while he is gaming and downloading without latency issues is nice.

Good to know. I'm going to see how much it would be to increase the speed. I also need to check our speed. We don't have netflix, etc for streaming.
