Default Knitters, I need help.

I'm a beginner knitter and I picked up an awesome book of things to knit. I'm doing this one project and it says to "miss first 5 st...". What does that mean? If needed, I can put the whole pattern on here and show you what I have so far.

Thanks!

Does it say miss or does it say m1ss?

It says:
RS facing, miss first 5 sts, pick up from 32nd row of body next 30 sts (missing last 5 sts).

I would think that means to pass the stiches across to the other needle without actually knitting them....But I must say I don't remember seeing a pattern that put it quite that way before. Maybe someone else has more idea!

What are you making and what are you doing right before those instructions?

Usually if they don't want you to knit the stitches they say "Slip". The way it is written almost sounds like you are picking up stitches.

what book is it? Where was it published?

I have a really neat crochet book that was published in China and I can't understand one of the instructions (it uses odd terminology and is missing some parts)
I eventually figured it out from the photo.

The book is called Knitorama and it's by Rachael Matthews. I'm pretty sure it's from the UK. The publication addresses it lists is London and NYC.

I'm knitting a grenade (that can be stuffed or used as a coin purse. I'm going to stuff it with notes and little knick knacks.) to send to my deployed husband. The directions are:
----------edited in case of copyright issues.
So I have already done the binding off. I didn't cut the yarn though because the next part (the TOP) confused me. So what do I do? I can take a pic of what I've done already if need be.

Thank you ladies!

I think it is just asking you to pick up the middle 30 sts on row 32. It is giving you the miss first 5 so that you don't have to work out how many to not pick up to get to the middle 30.

Yes, exactly. You will be picking up stitches.

And I'd like to mention that you just don't mess around, do you? Most beginning knitters make scarves.

Hmm, okay, I still don't know what that means. I guess I'll have to ask someone locally to explain/show it to me. I think I have jumped a little too far since I'm a beginner. Oops. Oh well. I must go on!
Okay, so I'm confused because I just bound off...what exactly does it mean to pick up stitches?

this was exactly where I was going to send you - the only difference is that she is picking up stitches on the edge and your pattern is telling you to pick up stitches along row 32.
The process of doing it will be the same.

Thanks for that link! I watched the video and I'm continuing on now. Not sure if I am still doing this pattern right, but I guess I'll find out!

I have learned so much from knittinghelp.

Have fun with your parents the first time I do a new patter there is often a moment when I am blindly following the patter because I can't tell if I am doing it right.

You can do it.
