William J Webb- Corporal Punishment in the Bible
I just finished this book and wanted to share about it. While it does not say that spanking should never be used, it does conclude that it is not a Biblical command that must be followed today and that using alternative methods is perfectly legit I think it would be a good starter book.
He is coming from a different angle than Crystal- he discusses historical punishments that were done during the time the Bible was written and uses "redemptive-movement hermeneutics" to show that the Dobson "2 spank" method is a redemptive-movement step down from the really brutal methods outlined in the Bible, which were much milder than the hideous methods of ancient history. One of the final chapters has lots of suggested tools for parents to use with preschoolers. Now they do like punitive time-outs and subscribe to 1-2-3 magic but there is a lot of good to be gleaned even in that chapter. Has anyone else read it?

I heard him speak in person on this (he's great) and have his other book, but I haven't read that one yet.
