I finally got around to starting another batch of booch. I've had three gallons that's been sitting since January.

Part of the SCOBYs looked really weird. Instead of shiny, smooth and white-ish it was more beige and crusty looking. On one of them, about half of the thing was obviously dried out in that crusty area. I didn't see anything that I thought might be mold. Think it's ok?

How much air flow is it getting? is it possible there wasn't enough liquid and too much head room in the jar?

Yes, there was a lot of head room from the evaporation.

But really, that could be it. You might could try a jar like a giant candy jar or pickling jar that has a loose lid but won't let bugs in and less headroom and see how it goes. I poke my scoby every so often once it gets solid-ish so it builds bigger in the 2-3 weeks I let it go.

Finally had my 1st brew!

I'm trying to do 2nd ferment, but Pumpkin keeps drinking it....and I may be helping

Its so good! I'm forcing myself to at least wait until tomorrow before trying more

I am brewing my first batch. I'm not sure if this looks right. It has been brewing for 10 days. Should my baby look like pond scum? The mother sank down to the bottom and never came up.

So does the baby look okay? Should I let it go longer? It smells vinegary and I see tiny bubbles. I am so ready to drink some!

Sorry the pics are so big. I couldnt figure out how to spoiler them.

I got the mother from another homeschool mom in our group. I made it exactly according to directions. EXCEPT that I made the tea the night before and then put it in the refrigerator then next morning I let both the tea and the starter get to room temp then put them together. Could that be the cause? BOOO HOOOOO!!!!!!!

Just those little white specks look all wrong, and it doesn't look like any baby I've ever seen. And the other scum looks soooo similar to the scum that I got on my moldy fermented carrots.

Could be your jar, maybe not clean enough - your tools, hands etc...

I would let it go another week or so just to make completely sure (it won't hurt anything), and if it's still gross you just throw it out. And wash everything really good in hot soapy water and vinegar rinse.

Thanks. This is my very very first batch ever. I just freaked out a little.

I had it in the bottom cabinet out of the light for 10 days. I am going to put it on the counter for a few days and watch it.

Oh, what did you have it covered with?

Make sure when it's on the counter that it's still in a dim spot.
